Bernie Sanders: We Need to End the 50-year-long Israeli Occupation

read more: Bernie Sanders: We need to end the 50-year-long Israeli occupation - U.S. News - Haaretz.com

:applaud:applaudBernie has it right, again. This really stuck out to me: ""We can oppose the policies of President Trump without being anti-American. We can oppose the policies of Netanyahu without being anti-Israel. We can oppose the policies of Islamic extremists without being anti Muslim. Peace means security not only for every Israeli but also for every Palestinian."".

Why doesn't he talk about islamic atrocities in the surrounding countries?

What is the "Endlösung" you propose?

And then so should the israelis

The Palestinians should have the same right to defend themselves and their country as Israel or Jordan

They do. They just haven't done a good job of it and the main price has been and continues to be born by the Palestinian people. Gaza could easily be wealthy as a first rate tourist industry. But their elite have prevented it.

So what are the plans for getting rid of the people occupying Israeli lands and getting them a leadership that isn't a kleptocracy? Just demanding that the Pals. leave isn't enough, there needs to be a plan to move them out and find them a good home before we start getting rid of the occupiers.

That I did not know

Where's Arafat's Money? - TIME

Arafat came from a group of expatriate Pals. who got kicked out of multiple countries before returning to the ME. They left Palestine and headed for Algiers, where they were branded as "undesirables" due to their extensive criminal activities and forced to leave, they then headed to Egypt (where Arafat was born) and faced the same situation. The ME leaders decided to send them back to where they started to use as their blunt instrument to attack the Israelis. Arafat's family history is far more that of a cross between the worst of the Gypsies and Cosa Nostra than some kind of freedom fighters.

You misread what I posted

Begin the 6th PM of Israel was a terrorist as part of Irgun.

Yes he was. What point or lesson should we learn from this?

Despite being a terrorist, he was accepted by the world as respectable leader at a later date after the goals of his terrorism were achieved

I'm not averse to accepting a truly reformed terrorist. Israel accepted Arafat afterall. I don't think Ismail Haniyah comes very close to qualifying though.

Did Bernie suggest this when Obama was elected and during the two years that Obama had substantial Democratic majorities, even a super majority for awhile, in both house of Congress? Or did he suggest it any time during the eight years Obama served as President?

Just now, that it is a Republican administration that would take the rap, it is okay to push this? How timid and hypocritical is that!? We are supposed to take it seriously? Israel has gone the second, third, fourth and more miles to agree to a two-state Palestinian solution and each time it was the Palestinians who refused to negotiate. They wanted Israel gone and were willing to settle for nothing else.

The last diplomatic attempt to create a two-nation solution was in 2008. There was no effort made for that during the Obama administration.

In my opinion, it is time for Syria, Egypt, and Jordan, who created the current mess when they attempted to militarily destroy Israel, to carve out a homeland for the Palestinians, and leave Israel alone and in possession of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It is time the international community stopped expecting Israel to make all the concessions and started making demands of those who created the problem.

. . .Reasonable people can disagree with Israel’s occupation and settlement policies—although even critics must acknowledge that Israel offered to end the West Bank occupation and settlements in 2000, 2001, and 2008 as part of a plan to create a two-state solution. The Palestinian leadership rejected the 2000 and 2001 offers and failed to respond to the 2008 proposal. Israel did unilaterally end its Gaza occupation and settlements, only to see that area turned into a launching pad for Hamas rockets and tunnels designed to kill Israeli civilians. . .

Like remove the settlements from the west bank, build a wall on the Israeli side of the 1967 boarder and enforce a security zone on that side where anyone crossing it is shot and killed on site?

The Palestinians can use the boarder with Jordan to do trade and travel. No need to go into Israel, and no need for Israelis to go into the West Bank. No contact, between the two populations, no chance for car bombs within Israel from Palestinians as no vehicle traffic will cross the boarder. No chance for suicide bombers (except tunnels which can be detected using ground sonar and collapsed on the Israeli side of the boarder.

Peace but no harmony. Just separation and total lack of contact
Oh you mean like we did in Gaza, this worked out just great didnt it.

What exactly do you mean "suggest this"? Suggest that the US should support a two state solution? Yes, he has.
"Leaders on both sides must recognize that the only solution to this conflict is thorough a political process that recognizes the Palestinian right to self-determination and the right of Jews to a safe and secure homeland in Israel.
We must work with those Israeli and Palestinian leaders who are truly committed to peace, security and statehood rather than empty rhetoric and violence. We must also enlist the help of the United Nations and the international community to lend support for a two-track process that provides the Palestinians with a state of their own while ensuring the security of the Israeli people.
A two-state solution must include compromises from both sides to achieve a fair and lasting peace in the region. The Palestinians must fulfill their responsibilities to arrest terrorists, confiscate terrorists’ weapons, dismantle terrorist organizations, halt all anti-Jewish and anti-Israel incitement, and recognize Israel’s right to exist. In return, the Israelis must end their policy of targeted killings, prevent further Israeli settlements on Palestinian land, and prevent the destruction of Palestinian homes, businesses and infrastructure."
