During this time of Covid19, I am reminded yet again of what we should have been doing before this. I believe that the nations of the world should have made an alliance when we first started sending people into space. This alliance should have been about spreading mankind to other planets, so that no disease or calamity could wipe out the human race. Part of this alliance would be to find out ways to get resources from space. Perhaps they would do this by mining asteroids or finding a suitable planet to terraform into a planet where the human species could live. Even if we can't figure out how to terraform a planet we could still mine asteroids and build a fleet of spaceships to defend Earth from threat, be it aliens or some other threat from space.

Too many different people, too many different belief systems, too many different societies.

It's a utopian dream that has no chance of working, in the world the way it is now.
We have countries that still routinely punish homosexuality with either severe beatings, jail time, or even death. Not to mention a slew of other issues that crop up when you would at least wish for all these people to cooperate.

Maybe in the future such unity will be possible, but not today.

Going to Mars is a global effort. The US and Russia have relied on each others' personnel vehicles for decades. All nations, dictatorships and such aside, have contributed.

Mining minerals will never be cost effective as long as any remain on Earth. Fortunately, it looks like Mars has water.

We'll get to the terraforming stuff after we manage a colony.

Then Pluto, water from moons on the way.

Funny how the US has led many such efforts before Trump. Face facts, Trump is a DIVIDER and not a UNITER. You have hitched yourself to a FAILURE in Trump. Unless you are a White supremacist, Trump is an absolute FAILURE.

LOL! If we were attacked by aliens, nobody would be saying, "But we're not united!" hahaha.

This is the problem with identity politics. You can't make friends on other planets.

The sun is getting bigger. If it wasn't for Pluto, we'd probably be done, roasted, on Mars. Pluto represents leaving the galaxy in more than a technological capability sense. Pluto is not from here. It's a gift, a life boat.

So you just chimed in to cry about Trump, seeing as the topic wasn't about him.

Then I would suggest that you stop playing at identity politics and come join the real world.

The President of the US is relevant to global cooperation.

Philosophical and social development has always, over time, accompanied technological development. Aliens don't attack. It's good for science fiction but it doesn't match the evidence we have available in our sample of one.

Yes, he's relevant to global cooperation. Yet he wasn't even mentioned in the OP.

.....

I believe that the nations of the world should have made an alliance

Those words, regardless of what time referenced, bring the current President of the US into relevance. When we say, "hey, what about all the nations working together" the first person we look at, globally, is him.

Covid-19 is alien. So is Hitler. and polio, and communism, and murder, and home invaders. We fight them together as we always have.

Remain calm and locked in your urban comfort chamber. The adults will return the country to normal and deliver lattes to the frightened. Here's some good news if you're in San Fran: San Francisco delivers alcohol, tobacco and weed to addicts quarantined in hotels | KTLA

I'm not the one fear mongering. Aliens don't attack. Aliens attacking is counter to all evidence and thus makes no sense. Stop trying to scare people.

No, each country would look to their own leaders. The president can only do so much, had all of this power really been in such an office to begin with. Then much of the same tensions we seen around the world today, would merely be a shadow of what they actually are.

The President of the US was, years ago, and will again be the leader of the free world. It's only right now there's an insane moron that no one would listen to unless they need some kind of excuse in their life.

No just unmasked you as a Trump sycophant and you will do anything and everything to protect your false king Trump. Thank you for that. You are dismissed.

Calling the president, the leader of the free world, is a nice sentiment. But that has never been, nor will it ever actually be their position. Nor would your opinion of Trump actually be of any relevance.

Given the way things have gone, I'd rather have Trump talking to other world leaders. Then be made to watch Obama knell for them all over again.

He isn't a king, so you're free to keep your tail tucked as long as you like.

I'll just look elsewhere for someone who actually has a spine.

You are overlooking the technical challenges. There is a very good reason why we have not left low-Earth orbit since 1972. Space is a very hostile environment to biological organisms. If we were to send anyone to Mars today they will be dead before they arrived. While in low-Earth orbit astronauts are mostly protected from solar and cosmic radiation. They still receive more than 10 times the dose we get on the surface, but at least it won't kill them or cause cancerous mutations. Beyond Earth's orbit and they have no protection against solar and cosmic radiation.

It would be possible to build a radiation "safe-room." Walls surrounded with water, for example, would be a good barrier against radiation. But that would only help with solar radiation since that can be detected in advance. Cosmic radiation can come from any direction and is completely unpredictable so a "safe-room" would be of no use.

Another technical challenge are the planets themselves. Only Mars, and a handful of moons around Jupiter and Saturn are even possible for humans to exist for very short periods, and both Jupiter and Saturn are beyond the Snow Line. The gas giants have no solid surface, Mercury has no atmosphere, and Venus is ~800°C on the surface and rains sulfuric acid. So that significantly reduces our options.

You treat him as king so that is all that anyone needs to see. You only prove Trump supporters are the ones who never question their king.

Thanks, Putin.

Trump bypassed security procedures to appoint his unqualified kid to the cabinet and his kid green lit the assassination of a US resident and journalist.

The hyperbole only proves how pathetic your shell of an argument is.

He's a president nothing more. Just let it go and grow up.

Thanks, Putin.

I've heard the story as well, too bad for you however. No evidence has actually surface to show that everything wasn't above board.

Now go act like a child somewhere else.

Nope you and other Trump supporters have treated him as so much more like a King. Sorry your actions proved me right.
