Twitter said it has suspended more than 200,000 accounts that it believes were part of a Chinese government influence campaign targeting the protest movement in Hong Kong.

The company also said Monday it will ban ads from state-backed media companies, expanding a prohibition it first applied in 2017 to two Russian entities.

I think the only thing that's surprising is that it's 200K. They must have bots or something.

Do you think government's use of social media to suppress their citizens will get worse in the future?

The Chinese government employs online trolls to push communist propaganda and nationalist sentiments or to try and own the narrative on comment threads on US social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter (which is ironic because both platforms are banned in China). They are commonly called "wumao."

They only got 200k? I thought they'd have far more than that. I think they put more effort into gold farming MMORPGs.

Not surprising at all. The Chinese government will continue to keep a tight lid on its citizenry and try to influence opinion in the rest of the world as well. It's just the nature of the beast. Free speech is anathema to them. They want controlled speech.

Agreed with others, I am impressed it was only 200K accounts.

Absolutely. Memes are effective propaganda.

They probably have much more. Twitter only got around 200K it seems.

Twitter is making up for it's mistake: putting up Chinese state-run propaganda ads against the protesters.
