Even the country’s most internationally prominent police officer, it seems, can vanish without an official murmur from Beijing

Interpol chief missing: Meng Hongwei's wife placed under protection after 'bizarre' disappearance in China

[snip]President of international police agency disappeared after travelling from France to China
French police investigating the “worrying” disappearance of Interpol chief Meng Hongwei have placed his wife under special protection after she received threats.

Mr Meng’s wife reported her husband missing on Friday, having not heard from him since 25 September when he travelled from France to his native China.

The French interior ministry said she was receiving protection in Lyon – where the couple lived and Interpol is based – after threats were made by phone and on social media.

This man is the head of Interpol
. Interpol it is an international organization that functions as a network of criminal law enforcement agencies from different countries. Interpol has a global network of 192 countries. If you've ever watched a movie where the good guys "run fingerprints against all known databases" the chances are they are doing it via I-24/7.

I-24/7 is Interpol's super secure network that links the member countries to each other and lets them search Interpol's international criminal databases. It's a bit like a private Internet just for police. It makes sense to me that if China wants access to this database they can uncover intelligence sources and even methods of investigations by Interpol.

When you consider the possibilities as to why the Chinese may want this man, it's a scary situation for agents working with Interpol around the world. If China is able to access the Interpol network, the agency will be compromised.

I am betting he turns up dead or in one of China's many concentration camps.

Yes I saw this a couple of days ago, clearly he has been compromised. They opened an investigation during which I would imagine he would have to stand down. I think the Chinese just shot themselves in the foot because the odds for anyone with remote ties to China filling these types of positions have just become extremely low.

The Saudi's also knocked off a Sauid journalist in Turkey (in their embassy), I find it interesting how America's foreign policy is affecting all these other countries. Either by becoming more aggressive themselves or feeling entitled (Saudi Arabia)

China is a honest about one thing: It is a dictatorship.

There is no pretense about impartial judges. Judges take their orders from the Communist Party.

So if you want to avoid being unjustly treated in China, the solution is simple: Do not go to China.

Mr. Meng should have known better than to set foot on Chinese soil.

(And there are no Florida-style dishonest elections, for China does not have elections!)

They'll accept you if you are Communist, but if you are not and want to maintain your right to free speech, don't go there.
