U.S. President Donald Trump boasted in a fundraising speech in Missouri on Wednesday that he made up facts about trade in a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to a recording of the comments obtained by The Washington Post.

The newspaper said in a report posted on its website that Trump had insisted to Trudeau that the United States runs a trade deficit with its neighbour to the north without knowing whether or not that was the case.

“Well, sir, you’re actually right,” Trump says in the recording. “We have no deficit but that doesn’t include energy and timber — and when you do, we lose $17 billion a year. It’s incredible.”

So this tells me that when Trump says crap that isn't true, he knows it isn't true and simply doesn't care.

The problem is, now that he's publicly admitted that he tried to bulls**t Trudeau, the other world leaders will know (if they didn't already) that Trump's word is literally worthless and not to be trusted.

Please clarify your post?

I posted a quote from the very same link in the OP.
It has Trump saying a deficit exists between the USA and Canada when lumber and timber is included.
What wasn't clear?

Read the last two paragraphs of your included link?

from link:

One example involves the supposed trade deficit with Canada. Trump keeps insisting it exists, but the document he signed states Canada is among the few countries in the world with whom the U.S. runs a surplus.

The document states: “The United States ran a trade surplus of $2.6 billion with Canada on a balance-of-payments basis.”

I did read it.
I read the whole thing before I posted.
A balance of payments basis includes everything.
Trump's point, whether trying to cover for himself or not, was that considering energy and timber, there's a big deficit with Canada.
And with timber, I would expect there to be.

What I thought was interesting was that he came out and opened up the can of worms himself in a speech.

In trade stats

Lumber and energy are already included in the trade surplus/deficit numbers. Sometimes services may not be included, if services are not included Canada runs a surplus, include services Canada runs a deficit

Note Services would include data centers consulting, etc. Goods of course would include energy, lumber, steel, car parts etc

I know they are. He was flagging them as 2 areas where there are deficits.

But regardless, Trump's focus is products, not services, because he's into building up the manufacturing sector and in products we do run a deficit with Canada.

Should Canada focus on the deficit in trade regarding tomatoes? Slap a tariff on them to build the Canadian tomato industry?

Or is that a stupid idea? Balancing trade is not a bad idea trying to balance in each sector is

wow, who would have ever thought that one of the most prolific lying politicians ever to run for president (for a major party) would make stuff up

Is anyone actually surprised by this?

Is anyone actually stupid enough to think that Trudeau fell for such an obvious lie? That is, other than the idiot who a) told the lie, and b) admitted he told a lie while negotiations are still in progress.

Tomorrow he will claim he never said he made up facts LOL

It's laughable (sad actually) that there is still anybody who defends this man, sorry, more like child

There are 2 sectors.
Using a services surplus to argue that it balances a goods deficit may be a good approach for Countries weaker in goods ... or for World ABC News or CNN to score political points.

He's not the first ignorant POTUS, but he's the first ignorant POTUS to brag about being so.

I knew about this last week

It is too bad PM Zoolander is not smart enough to know he is being lied to. Also too bad he does not have the balls to stand up to Trump.

His old man must be rolling in his grave thinking "There is no way that is my son"
