Just thought I'd bring this up if anyone is interested, sorry for the long post but if this is a subject that interests you I don't think it's been talked about on DP and I thought I'd give you guys a few resources to learn about what is happening in the Kingdom as of course, this will effect you in some way whether it changes Oil Prices etc.

It seems that King Salman and his Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman are creating an atmosphere for succession in the Kingdom and that King Salman plans to abdicate due to advanced age and health concerns.

Earlier in the year there were major crackdowns by Saudi security forces against dissidents in the country which was largely overshadowed in the US Media by coverage of North Korean Nuclear provocation and of course the successive hurricanes that occurred.

Saudi authorities have launched the most severe crackdown on dissent in years, arresting prominent clerics and activists amid growing speculation that King Salman will abdicate in favor of his powerful son.

Just today it has emerged that the Crown Prince has been doing some housekeeping of his own:

The detentions came hours after the new committee, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was formed by royal decree.

Separately, the heads of the Saudi National Guard and the navy were replaced in a series of high-profile sackings.

SPA said King Salman had dismissed National Guard minister Prince Miteb bin Abdullah and navy commander Admiral Abdullah bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Sultan.

Even absolute leaders such as the Saudi Royal Family play the Game of Thrones and it is as true in the show as in real life, if you lose, you die and from a morbid point of view... One has to... Admire the efficiency taking place here.

It is interesting to note that Bin Salman only became crown prince of June this year and has been very busy.

He's been in charge of the Saudi war effort in Yemen and in charge of major economic reforms aimed at reducing the Kingdoms reliance on Oil revenues and diversifying the economy.

It's called the Saudi Vision 2030, details here:

An additional resource I will give is one of the finest youtubers out there, CaspianReport in an excellent video going into a bit more detail about all this.

So we shall see what happens here, if young blood might bring badly needed social reform to the Kingdom or whether the complicated relationship between the Government and the Clergy keeps reform in the social sphere at a snails pace.

Very interesting times.

The oil money is running out fast and they are desperate to figure out what's next.

I like this turn of events, doing things better is always better.

The answer is to build a city in the desert.

The next step when the oil money stops is to flee and leave the place to the poor.

From what I have been able to follow, the prince is turning more than few heads abroad as well. Even clergy in neighboring regions are starting to notice a specific power change, and some of them are speaking up, though still remaining anonymous.

I ran across this the other day when doing my usual news crawl, and though the independent isn't my first choice. It does share some pertinent information.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman: Naive, arrogant Saudi prince is playing with fire | The Independent

I do find this change interesting, and problematic at the same time.

The Saudis will invest in robotics to take over before the oil is gone or no longer bringing in the money. Sophia the robot has just been made a Saudi citizen, the first robot citizen.

Do you think that the deeply Islamic society where God decieds what happens next will be better at developing, using and improving technology than the West in general and the Anglo-West especially?

Will they let her/it drive?

My understanding is that they have both mismanaged the oil fields and waited 20 years too long to try to figure out what comes next, but that they are finally on the stick. This would have been much easier to get done earlier though, when they were flush.

No, but they have the money and they know they need something after oil or they will become irrelevant.

Taste:
These moves and messages, as well as youth rallies organized by the prince's own MiSK Foundation, suggest a strategy of building a "base" outside of the prevailing religious and political establishment. That base would appear to center on Saudi Arabia's young people -- half the population is under 30 -- including its women. Moves toward a more tolerant, open society have also garnered support from commercial elites, Croft noted. From the perspective of outside investors and, of course, anyone with an interest in oil markets, this all constitutes a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the prince has set out a sweeping reform plan that could strengthen Saudi Arabia over the long term and is consolidating the power he needs to make good on that. This weekend, on that optimistic reading, is a step forward.Yet there's no denying that the world has also just witnessed a classic palace purge taken from a playbook as old as autocracy itself. I don't know if it was triggered by a perceived internal threat, but the suddenness of it certainly raises the question. It also shows how, for all the messaging of reform and openness, some old-school key-man risk lurks beneath this entire project.
