United Nations created during the closing of WWII, 1945. Until now 2017 United Nations still survives ranging through remarkable operations and notorious failures. How and why does it still exist? Why or why not it should or should not exist?

The UN exists to give people like you something to talk about.

While I think the UN needs some serious revamping, I think some like the UN is important to have. Why? Because we are all stuck in this tiny piece of rock together whether we like it or not.

Yes, and having the US and China locked in a struggle to see who is going to be the top dog superpower is not the best way to preserve this pretty little blue and green dot on which we all depend.

Problem with an organisation like the UN, is the different expectations. Many people I talk to, actually think that the UN is suppose to be some sort of world police.. it aint, and never was intended to be. It was designed to be the meeting place for international cooperation and hence prevention of conflicts. Now it is not always possible to prevent conflicts, and not always possible for international cooperation but we need a place to meet and have the ability to cooperate and that is the point of the UN.

Now does the UN need reforms? Yes, I would like to get rid of the veto power in the UN security council.

Could the UN need a "needs to be a democracy to be a member" aspect.. well, that would take out most of the countries in the membership, including all but France in the UN security council (permanent members).

It all comes down to expectations.. what do we want the UN to be.. a police force that enforces democracy and liberty.. or a discussion forum for nations? The first is not realistic, and the later is what we have today.

The UN exists to give jobs to untalented bureaucrats. Let's say you've got an untalented cousin who's a real screw up. They need a job but no responsibility. Bingo, UN.

The UN continues to exist because the U.S. subsidizes it. It should not exist. If we abandon it, it will cease to exist.

And that's the real truth. And the same could be said about most international organizations. WHO, IMF, NATO and others.

You're right, something like the UN is necessary. The UN isn't.
It's a buffoonish organization that backwards nations and dark regimes abuse to avoid confrontation for their actions or bash the West.

It still has a function because the world is a bit better with it than a world without it.

The UN is needed in case a country is insane enough to elect a moronic reality TV show presenter president.

To me, the UN is a waste. All it does is give all countries a worldwide forum for them to spout their propaganda. It also gives the more powerful countries a place to get supposedly world agreement for them to wage war on less powerful countries and to effect regime change as they see fit or want.

The UN runs counter to the best interests and sovereignty of the US and we should get out of it.

Sounds like the UN would be out of their league. The insanity is staying in this ridiculous agreement.

The UN is a Paper Tiger. Worse, it's a Political Paper Tiger. Worse still, it's a Partisan Political Paper Tiger. And its Roar has become Ridiculous.

So what revamping would you suggest? The UN will be dysfunctional as long as the leadership of its member states are, and even if you exclude the vast amount of countries led by insane sociopaths it has to be said that you average democratically elected leader is hardly a paragon of virtue either. Furthermore if you expect the UN to exist as a power in its own right and enforce its benine will on unwilling member states then you need only look at the World Bank, the WTO or the EU.

I think something like the UN needs to exist because there are issues like the law of the seas, pollution, trafficking of weapons and people, and chemical and nuclear weapons where its in everyones interest to cooperate. However I find it difficult to imagine how it could be changed into something more benine.

I like the idea of the United Nations, but some of the past and present corruption needs to be addressed.
