The United Nations: What’s the Point?

It's not clear the organization can effectively confront—or even survive—today's challenges....

Interesting article by journalist Uri Friedman (The Atlantic) regarding his interview of former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd.

We discussed the point of the UN 20 years ago and it seemed that in spite of all its handicaps it was better suited to try and use it to face the obvious challenges of the 21st century than alternatives like Nato or a new organization. That was one reason for initiating the 2005 changes in norms and mandate.

But Obama seems to have done nothing to further security and has wasted 8 years, while the dangers have risen.

I have been of the opinion for some time that the UN has become a worthless organization that exists to provide opportunity for Ambassadors from around the world to live in luxury while pretending to do something important.

I haven't changed that opinion, but as the article points out, there are some extremely dangerous organizations gain strength that would fill in the void should the UN be relegated to obscurity.

For example, the World Economic Forum that meets in Davos, Switzerland is one such group. Very, very dangerous group of elites seeking absolute control over all human beings.

I've not spent enough time and energy to consider what should be done to correct the growing obscurity of the UN, but it should not be relegated to the scrap heap.

The point?

To provide a procedural/political set of traps in which international disputes can get tied up rather than exploding in hot war. It's there as a handbrake, not a tool for accomplishing anything in its own right.

It is also a place where consessions are made that the public is not aware of because they are usually not in the Wests favor. The UN is virtually an Islamic tool, they control the largest voting block. Israel being the most sanctioned proves that.
