The Trump administration has an intentional and explicit policy of separating migrant children from their families if caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border without permission. Long before that, however, the administration of Barack Obama ramped up a program with a sometimes similar effect.

Since 2008, the United States has had a policy known as the Alien Transfer Exit Program (ATEP), or Lateral Repatriation. This program focuses on detaining male migrants of Mexican descent.

Federal courts stopped the administration from holding families for months without justifying the decision to keep them in detention. Thus families ended up getting released while their cases were pending.
People like yourself started screeching about it and calling it "catch and release."

New arrivals who are detained while seeking asylum have to be issued an official order of removal — and usually, it needs to be issued by an immigration judge.
Courts are so backlogged right now that a wait to see a judge could take weeks.
If an immigrant actually has an argument to be allowed to stay in the United States, it could be years before the case is resolved.
If they have to release them because of a court order, or if it simply doesn’t have the resources to keep her in detention for years — it can theoretically be accused of practicing "catch and release" because there is no actual single policy called that, it's what people on your side refer to anytime a court releases an immigrant.
Trump ordered Jeff Sessions to decree that all immigrants caught crossing into the US be kept in detention while their cases were resolved, including asylum seekers.

A law passed in 2008, the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), made it easier for these children to apply for and qualify for legal status in the US. (It also created a separate, quicker screening process for Mexican children caught at the border — which has been criticized by international observers for not protecting trafficking victims.)

This appears to be one of the "Obama" laws Trump is referring to (though it was signed into law by George W. Bush).

Once again, your president has been caught in a bald face lie.

Umm, even the article you linked notes that under Obama, the children were NOT separated from their mothers

So why are you so bad at lying?

They were at times and the places are described as far worse than anything going on today. I can recall this activity going on back to the 1990s.
This whole story, bashing the Trump Administration, is a bunch of crap. They are following the law and some folks just hate that when it's contrary to their nefarious, anti-Trump agenda.
In spite of the scumy Left, Trump is on course to win in 2020.
