Bus Driver Tells Passengers Only U.S. Citizens Can Ride As Border Patrol Agent Looks On

A bus driver in Maine told passengers they needed to be U.S. citizens to ride on a bus while an immigration official questioned passengers’ citizenship.

The incident happened in the city of Bangor over Memorial Day weekend, the ACLU of New Hampshire said in a video statement.

So, you have to be an American citizen to ride a bus in the US, or is it just in Maine? I rode a bus in Canada without being a citizen of that nation.

And, I've seen busloads of people in Yosemite, all taking pictures like crazy and speaking Japanese. Were they actually American citizens?

Maybe it's only in Maine.

Was it a bus for voters only, going to a voting station?

I'm trying to imagine a scenario where it makes sense. Even the passenger's comment, "I doubt that" fits.

U.S. Citizenship checks for a coach line?
It is not a requirement to access public or private transportation and it never has been, nor can it ever be.

Although the ICE agents are indeed acting within their legal right to screen undocumented persons, the idea that resident aliens and other legal types of non-citizen residents (such as those who are here on a VISA) are prohibited from riding on a bus, train, airplane or other form of for hire transportation is absurd.

Ive ridden buses and trains in Europe and Asia as a tourist, and they never asked for my citizenship, just my ticket.

There's no problem here...catch the next bus.

Sounds like a great way to kill tourism. Someone needs to talk to this xenophobic nut's manager and have him replaced.

I have only been asked for a passport on a bus once, it was on a school trip while going over the US border which is understandable and the only time someone on a bus should need to.

One of my friends was detained for a bit because she has a British passport but her nationality is Zimbabwean and she is white as a ghost, they thought it was a fake.

Employees of the coach line expressed prohibition against doing so, or did you miss the point entirely?
And one is not required to modify their travel timetable to accommodate deliberate manufacture of lies told by misinformed employees. There is a problem here, a coach line is engaging in vigilantism.
It is, in fact, against the law.

"... Immigration inspections at transportation hubs are not a new practice. U.S. Border Patrol, which is part of Customs and Border Protection, has the authority to conduct citizenship checks without a warrant within 100 miles of the nation’s land and coastal borders. That includes the entire state of Maine. ..."

How come the ACLU and media has never reported on these kind of checks before? Did they never happened before Trump became president?

The bus driver is not a border agent, not to mention buses are not restricted by citizenship.

Well, not surprising. The current POTUS is emboldening this type of behavior.

I always carry proof of citizenship when traveling by bus. You never know when a bus will be hijacked and you end up in an unfriendly country like Tahiti, the Jersey Shore, South Hampton Long Island or Malibu, California. :doh

Those people get damned vicious over beach rights.

Catch the next bus or walk. Get a bike, buy a used Pontiac. Just improvise.

March 2015 - "When they reached the Greyhound Bus Station on Congress Street, they were pretty unhappy to see Border Patrol agents escorted inside the bus by Greyhound staff. I couldn't find the relevant ACLU's hissy fits for those cases.

Another hissy fit post by liberals about something that has been going on under Obama and prior presidents ...

and nobody gave a **** about it ... until Trump got elected.

Show reports from that time of border agents roaming the country exceeding their authority..

The ridiculous part of this story is that you're acting as if EVERY bus in America has been ordered by Trump to do this. Chill out, it was one nitwit in Bangor.

Greyhound officials said they are following the law by letting Border Patrol agents question their passengers.
But the ACLU said Greyhound has the right and responsibility to demand a warrant for Border Patrol officers to board its buses.

So the ACLU is going to tell Greyhound how to run their business? Pftt.
