In the mist of the controversy regarding Trump's immigration policies, how would you want it to be?

Most of the conversation I've seen regarding this have been "screw Trump/yay trump/screw liberals/screw conservatives" rhetoric. In an attempt to break it up a bit, I'm interested in discussion regarding how you'd want the whole ordeal to be handled overall - the way immigrates become citizens, the policies regarding illegals, etc.

I know many people, especially here, have concerns regarding our immigration laws and immigration itself - national security, families being split, potentially nationalistic nature of preventing foreigners from living here, waiting times, illegal immigration, cultural unity, the like - and it makes me interested in how you think our country should go about running the system (if it should be any different at all).

I'm not necessarily asking if you think Trump or anyone else is doing the right or wrong thing, just asking how you'd go about it, in your ideal world.

I want people to come legally, in the numbers we decide, and I want to pick the best people from the best places, ****hole countries I want to mostly avoid.

People who come illegally I want to make their lives as hard as possible till we can find them and ship them back to the country they belong to.

By "Best People" I do not mean geniuses or wannabe geniuses, I mean best for our needs.

I think the system now works, it just needs to move through the phases more quickly. There also needs to be a limit. We do not have infinite resources.

As far as how we handle illegal immigration, unless it is a true asylum situation, the person or persons should be deported immediately. You don't get rewarded for skipping the legal process by being given a 'notice to appear', no detention centers, you get turned around and sent right back over the border. If you came by boat, you get put on the very next one back.

I would set up medical facility to treat any immediate life threatening situations, right near whatever exit points, and when the person is cleared, they leave immediately.

I don't think they want solutions. They just want to bash Trump.

This thread is a good way to test that theory. We will see who on the left shows up with an actual answer to the question of how a family with minor children who cross the border illegally be handled.

I would actually like to hear something other than the current 'discussions' about it. Someone, on either side, might actually have some good ideas if not drowned out by all the name calling and jabs.

My family came through Ellis Island, they and their offspring have all contributed, started business, fought wars, raised family's, rinse repeat. Somewhere along the way, to our detriment, we've forgot the "send me your huddled masses part". Especially now when we are at full employment, when farmers are desperate for help to bring in their crops, restaurants and hotels need help and construction jobs go wanting, just maybe we should think about building intake centers instead of walls. If built buildings and staffed them (good, clean jobs for AmeriCANs) we could make sure that those coming in are the kind of people we want and NEED.

We need to HELP the immigrants already here (and contributing) to become naturalized, if they want. Many of these people have NO papers, not American, not Mexican … NONE. Where are we going to deport them to?

Instead of spending Trillions on a wall, that nobody thinks will work, we could spend millions and solve the problem, AND enrich our work force in the process.

Dream Scenario: Limit social safety net to disabled and elderly, open the borders.

Realistic scenario: Complete reform, A merit based system with no caps on the number of people that can come. If you can show that you will be able to provide for yourself then come on over. Possibly a temporary status to show you can hold a job.

Likely Scenario: Same broken system.

Handling Illegal Immigration: We don't need a wall, or a ton of border patrol, wasting time and money rounding up people to deport them only for them to cross the border again. Simply place a heavy fine on employing and housing illegal aliens. To further expand on that, a small reward of 10% of the fine collected goes to anyone who brings information that leads to someone caught in violation. Take away any incentive for them to come and they will stop.
