APNewsBreak: US launches bid to find citizenship cheaters

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. government agency that oversees immigration applications is launching an office that will focus on identifying Americans who are suspected of cheating to get their citizenship and seek to strip them of it.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director L. Francis Cissna told The Associated Press in an interview that his agency is hiring several dozen lawyers and immigration officers to review cases of immigrants who were ordered deported and are suspected of using fake identities to later get green cards and citizenship through naturalization.

Cissna said the cases would be referred to the Department of Justice, whose attorneys could then seek to remove the immigrants’ citizenship in civil court proceedings. In some cases, government attorneys could bring criminal charges related to fraud.

Until now, the agency has pursued cases as they arose but not through a coordinated effort, Cissna said. He said he hopes the agency’s new office in Los Angeles will be running by next year but added that investigating and referring cases for prosecution will likely take longer.

One of the methods under consideration is denaturalization, revoking citizenship of the accused. Denaturalization to my knowledge has only been used againist former Nazi war criminals living in the United States, and the only reason why they lost their citizenship was in order to be sent back to the country they came from and which was seeking criminal charges againist war crimes committed back in world war 2

Sure, if the only reason you’re a citizen is through fraud then you’re not a citizen. You’re not legally permitted to keep benefits obtained fraudulently

"Of the accused," rather than "of the convicted." That's going to be interesting to watch.

...sent back to the country they came from and which was seeking criminal charges against war crimes committed back in world war 2
That's really going to solve a lot of problems. Strip a person's U.S. citizenship from them and send them to a country of which they are no longer citizens. Declaring our closest ally (literally and figuratively) a national security threat while offering encomia to despots, one of whom attacked our electoral process and another of which literally threatened to nuke us....willfully implementing innately indurate policies rather than ones suffused with adamantine rectitude....I wonder how many other ways the Trump Admin. can devise to make the U.S. a pariah.....
