The national debate over federal immigration policies landed in Montgomery County this week, with dozens of residents testifying before the County Council on whether the state’s most populous county should spend taxpayer dollars to provide lawyers to immigrants facing deportation.

Baltimore City and Prince George’s County in Maryland, along with Chicago, Atlanta and other jurisdictions across the country, have launched or expanded legal-aid programs as the Trump administration stepped up efforts to deport immigrants.

Now Montgomery — a county of about 1 million residents, nearly 1 in 3 of whom is foreign-born — is weighing whether to follow suit.

What could go wrong?

ICE officers arrest driver in crash that killed two law enforcement officers in Maryland. Federal immigration officers on Thursday arrested the driver of a Honda Accord that fatally struck two law enforcement officers in Maryland late last year, officials said Friday.

Roberto Garza Palacios, 28, was taken into custody at his residence, said Justine Whelan, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

These are a few of the many crime stories from Montgomery Co. in just the past 2 weeks. Enjoy your future liberals. :2wave:

What does the nature of the alleged crime have to do with being entitled to an attorney?

What does the nature of the alleged crime have to do with being entitled to an attorney?

Non citizens are not entitled to tax payer funded attorneys over immigration matters. If we fall into this trap, we'll end up spending billions nationally to legally defend people who aren't even in the country legally in the first place.

Ok. So tackle that point rather than the nature of the crimes.

That said, when dealing with ICE one should still be entitled to an attorney. You are putting too much trust in ICE to determine who and who doesn’t get representation. Attorneys are one of the checks on the system. Left to their own devices ICE will scoop up even US citizens into the system and hold them for extraordinary amounts of time. Trusting ICE to conduct themselves professionally unchecked is putting too much trust in the government. We discussed why fairly recently.

You know, the truth is a very important thing. By compiling a bunch of scare stories, you have abused the truth, much as you often do.

Non citizens are not entitled to tax payer funded attorneys over immigration matters. If we fall into this trap, we'll end up spending billions nationally to legally defend people who aren't even in the country legally in the first place.

So let the citizens there vote on it. I could pull equally stupid sounding cases from places in the old slave states involving only white rednecks.

There are, what, 330 million people in the USA? What % of that county is a criminal problem out of the 1 million residents?

Let the locals deal. They can; they will. A lot of places in that area are going through intense gentrification.

Are you attempting to say that liberals want to keep undocumented aliens who commit crimes of this nature in our country?
You're not coming right out and saying so directly, but somehow (maybe I'm imagining it?) my gut senses that you're maybe trying to imply it.

For the record, not that I think you'll remotely take this at face value, but FOR the RECORD, I think it is safe to say that most liberals are okay with undocumented aliens to have a reasonable and affordable path to legal residency provided that they are law abiding, pay taxes and are productive members of the community.

Anything outside of that is fringe material, and although you're sure to find a handful of ultra-Lefty extremists who likely say that they don't believe in any kind of borders whatsoever, it doesn't change the likelihood that mainstream liberals simply expect some semblance of

Naturally, anyone who plans to come to the United States would do well to become informed before they ever set foot here to begin with.
That said, there have been, in the past, nonprofit outfits which try to inform non-detained illegal immigrants of their rights.
Even that is being shut down by the DOJ:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/immigration/justice-dept-to-halt-legal-advice-program-for-immigrants-in-detention/2018/04/10/40b668aa-3cfc-11e8-974f-aacd97698cef_story.html

"It has long been the case that immigrants have a right to counsel in immigration court, but that expense has generally been borne by the noncitizen. Because deportation is classified as a civil rather than a criminal sanction, immigrants facing removal are not afforded the constitutional protections under the Sixth Amendment that are provided to criminal defendants. Whereas in the criminal justice system, all defendants facing even one day in jail are provided an attorney if they cannot afford one, immigrants facing deportation generally do not have that opportunity. Detained immigrants, particularly those held in remote locations, face the additional obstacle of accessing counsel from behind bars. Yet, in every immigration case, the government is represented by a trained attorney who can argue for deportation, regardless of whether the immigrant is represented."

https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/access-counsel-immigration-court

If an undocumented alien commits a crime, there are already charitable organizations which attempt to fill the gaps.
If an undocumented alien cannot even afford basic legal representation, perhaps that speaks to gaps in our current immigration laws that pertain to a person's ability to earn a living. That question speaks to the heart of immigration reform.
Many countries use a merit system, but they also provide a more robust pathway to citizenship for qualified applicants.

I just want to make sure that you're not sneaking in the supposition that "liberals welcome criminals".
Again, it's just a gut feeling.
Maybe my gut was slightly triggered by:

I grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland...Bethesda, to be exact.

Gentrification test:

How much do you think this home costs right now in Montgomery County?
(It cost 29 thousand when we moved into it in 1960)

Are you attempting to say that liberals want to keep undocumented aliens who commit crimes of this nature in our country?

Some undoubtedly do. Take San Franciscans for example, where Edwin Ramos, who'd been an illegal immigrant and frequent flier in SF Jails massacred a father and his sons in 2008. No attempt was ever made by Kamala Harris' DA office to remand Ramos to ICE during his lawless days as an MS-13 member living in the Mission District.

SF was unfazed, and didn't change course, resulting in the Kate Steinle murder 7 years later. You can't tell me that many libs and progressives give a **** if illegals do these kinds of things repeatedly, because there's no major outcry from them. But if you try to deport someone, libs/progressives will picket and protest all day long.

For the record, not that I think you'll remotely take this at face value, but FOR the RECORD, I think it is safe to say that most liberals are okay with undocumented aliens to have a reasonable and affordable path to legal residency provided that they are law abiding, pay taxes and are productive members of the community.

Here's where history is on my side; the 1986 amnesty of 3.6 million illegals was supposed to be a way to stop illegal immigration. Instead, it encouraged it to flourish, as foreigners realized that Americans back bone has been replaced by a wellspring of tears that they cry daily for being born pwivleged.

Anything outside of that is fringe material, and although you're sure to find a handful of ultra-Lefty extremists who likely say that they don't believe in any kind of borders whatsoever, it doesn't change the likelihood that mainstream liberals simply expect some semblance of

Fringe lefties like the Open Society Foundation, which has billions of dollars & close ties right into the mainstream DNC. See, it doesn't really matter what moderate Democrats want, what they're going to GET is what Soros tells Dem elected officials to dole out to them.

Give me your tired, your poor, your....(you get the point)

That quote is taken from a 19th century poem that was written by a rich heiress to a family fortune- not exactly the sentiment of most working Americans in 2018. Also, the poem's author, Emma Lazarus, was primarily concerned with saving victims of Jewish pogroms in Europe. So I'd assume that her ideal candidate for citizenship was somebody whose basis for entering the country was based upon extreme dire need, NOT the desire to own a Cadillac Escalade and 15 pairs of Nikes.

The majority of working Americans would find it difficult to afford an attorney to represent them in any setting. If you want tax funds to pay lawyers fees for illegals who are facing deportation, I would ask what the hell is wrong with you? You don't see the thousands of homeless people in southern California or northern California, whichever one you reside in? Or what about the lack of funding for combat vets with PTSD, or those wounded in action? We don't have enough money for them, yet we have millions of dollars to pay for non-Americans to fight deportation? Bull****.

I just want to make sure that you're not sneaking in the supposition that "liberals welcome criminals".

They support voting rights for felons, blame Americans rather than drug cartels for the drug epidemic, and get angry with anyone who cites specific violent crimes that illegals commit against Americans. I'm probably not going out on a limb to say that liberals are more than a tad bit comfortable with trading safety for diversity/votes.

Sniff sniff, what's that smell??

I don't know, but if it's fresh baked cookies, don't boggart 'em.

So because a politician didn't make an effort to remand a known criminal into custody, you're going to overlay that decision on every liberal in SF.
My my my, isn't this the very thing that you whine and cry about when you accuse liberals of painting all those on the Right with that broad brush? Yeah, it's exactly that, and therefore it ranks in the Top Ten Stupidest things you've ever said.

You went out on a limb, that's for sure.
And it WAS AMERICANS who brought most of the drug epidemic to the United States. The CIA has been exposed.
BY A DECORATED LAPD POLICE OFFICER. (see video)

Cocaine went from $125 a gram (the typical price during the 70's disco era) down to as low as twenty bucks a gram in the space of a YEAR after Oliver North's CIA COCAINE shipments started flooding the streets of our cities, especially Los Angeles. I was a cocaine addict during that period, pal...you don't know JACK **** about it, I do.
And I was AT THIS MEETING by the way, I witnessed Ruppert talking firsthand.
Not only that, during one two month period, I was actually doing cocaine and soaking in a hot tub at the house of an LAPD Pacific Division police officer, who lived on Centinela Avenue in West LA. I could take you to the house where he lived RIGHT NOW if you wanted.
I'll even go there in the presence of LAPD if need be, and point the house out, because they know this guy was a coke head.
You know what they say, cops always have the best dope!

And by the way, didn't you recently express support for convicted felons to keep their guns or get them back?

And net illegal immigration from Mexico is less than zero since 2011, in fact, more illegal Mexicans have been returning.

Myth. Now I'm sure WaPo and NYT have articles up the wazoo stating that Mexicans are going home because of how much America sucks. Where do they get their info from? The Illegal Immigration Census? It's all nonsense Check. No precise measure exists for counting the number of illegal immigrants in the USA. So we're told that the number has stayed at 11 million, which they first trotted out in 2004. Ridiculous.

The radioactive George Soros bomb? Not impressed.

Libs have decided that George Soros, the Nazi Collaborator & man who attempted to bankrupt 3rd world countries for his own personal profit, is really just a charming philanthropist grandpa. Suckers.

I've seen the video, as well as read about Ruppert. This might surprise you, but I tend to believe what he said, as you do. I guess the Deep State predates Donald Trump doesn't it? Careful Check, you're deviating from the nice safe script here, you don't want to be labeled a conspiracy theorist by your brothers and sisters in the Cult of Big Government Nut Huggers. Being branded with the CT mark is almost as ostracizing as being branded with the xenophobic branding iron.

No, that's ****ing ludicrous, even for you.

Any sound my ass emits has more logic to it than your posts do concerning immigration. You once argued that immigration from 3rd world countries doesn't create an impoverished underclass. Then after I corrected you with facts, you changed your stance to state that impoverished underclasses are an important and vibrant part of the American fabric.

Sanctuary cities isn't the same thing as "welcoming criminals".
You can spin your fantasy Trump yarns about rapists and killers all day long, it doesn't change the fact that the reason we even HAVE undocumented aliens is because the American economy obviously needs them and wants them, and if they weren't here already, we'd be sending buses down to recruit them, just like we DID a FEW DECADES AGO.

Scream and cry about bull**** stories of "beaners" sneaking across the border and suddenly owning Escalades and fifteen pairs of Nikes.
I think you should use a HUGE FONT when you type nonsense like that, and use a lot of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'s.

It's damn funny.

Since when did government corrupt and criminal activities become "the deep state".
The government has been helping bring drugs into the country ever since the days of Clark Clifford and John Foster Dulles.

Since when have you given a fiddler's **** about homeless people anywhere? You now admit that soldiers are not treated well by the Trump government?

That IS a shock.

But what do the legal troubles of the homeless have to do with ensuring the United States Constitution is upheld? Oh, wait....I forgot, in Trump's world the constitution begins and ends with the second amendment.

It amazes me how the rabid right so easily wipes their ass with the constitution yet run around like chicken little trying to out-patriot one another. It's actually very disgusting

Wow, hey there TAAC, off the top of my head, I think you've got about 75 percent of the country's population included.
Sounds like the WILL OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE takes precedence over your Trumpian temper tantrums.
In fact, based on the specific counties, it smells very familiar, it's the smell of THE FREE MARKET.

See you in November, and oh yeah, don't forget to threaten civil war if the mid-terms don't go the way you wanted!!
Here's your motivational poster! But just remember, you folks already TELEGRAPHED your intentions a long time ago, and we've been ready for your civil war for a long time.
We the People, are going to kick your asses from here to Kingdom Come a second time.

And George Soros is a Nazi collaborator, time for a new sig line! THANKS TAAC!

Steve Kroft: It's my understanding that you went out and helped in the confiscation of property from the Jews?

George Soros: Yes, that's right.

Add this to your sig.
