States, cities sue U.S. to block 2020 census citizenship question

My first thoughts on this regard what the question will actually ask:

Are you:
A: A Citizen of the USA
B. A non-citizen, but legal resident
C: A non citizen and illegal resident

Who in their right mind would check C ?

If you enter the USA there is an immigration form to fill out...citizens have probably never read it but it asks the most stupid questions, like are you entering the USA to overthrow the elected government.
Has anyone, ever checked "YES" for that ?

When the Constitution was written, just coming in the USA and settling down automatically made you a citizen...one of the problems of a Constitution over 200 years old.

IMO the Census needs to be scrapped - repeal that part of the Constitution. Sure we need a head count every 10 years or so but the IRS already has that data.

Knowing the number of non-citizens in a country is an essential demographic.

The fact that this is being contested is a demonstration in and of itself of perverse mindset.

You have a country

You have citizenship

A census if for no other reason should be taken to determine how many citizens reside in a country.

The rest (race, gender, income) is demographic hullabaloo.

The removal of this fundamental question and the current contestation of its return was and is being done for purely political reasons.

Can't go giving illegal aliens and non-citizens ID cards suitable for conducting governmental business with the added bonus of automatic voter registration if there is a database for cross reference, now can you?

It's funny the people who sob every day and cry in their pillows every night about equality are the one's who are wailing in protest against what should rightfully be considered -- based on their own ideology of equality -- the only legitimate question to be asked.

The critics are right. The 2020 citizenship question is a purely political maneuver (to disenfranchise blue states) rather than a true demographic necessity.

If it is a true demographic necessity then knowing their actual legal status is imperative. So, I think you got it backwards.

Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution says nothing about citizenship as a qualifier. All "free persons" are to be counted.

They are counted... in the non-citizens category and also in the over all total.
