States, cities sue U.S. to block 2020 census citizenship question

Too bad. If they don't want to take the time to answer one extra question, that's on them. So instead they want to not have the question, so states get more federal funds aka taxpayers money, than they are entitled to AND more political representation. Yup, that sounds fair.

thanks for weighing in. when did your family get here, BTW?

My family came here LEGALLY many years ago.

same here. did your family come before or after everyone got scared of the Chinese (after they'd built us a lot of railroads) and changed the rules?

Half before, half after. Why?

Agreed, we can use IRS data to count US taxPAYERS and their legal dependents instead.

The Constitution demanded a count every 10 years because no one had a SSN back then.

We can now simply add up the SSNs on Tax forms and call it the census and save a bundle.

Taking the census is an executive branch function and Trump is free to take the count the best and most efficient way he can.

Except here on the border one SSN may represent 5 or more folks..

Funny, we asked citizenship from 1820 until 1950 on the short form and through 2000 on the long form....

I guess the Democrats are fearful they will loss population counts in the areas most populated by illegal immigrants. And congressional seats. And funding.

It they aren't citizens should they be filling out the census?

Yes, because the data from the census is also used to allocate federal funding for things like education, law enforcement, federal highway projects, and many other programs. The data is also used for planning and policy making, such as planning national health strategies. Other than being a Constituional requirement it is also an incredibly useful tool.

If it were just used for allocating representatives then it might make sense for only citizens to answer it, but that isn’t all it is used for.

One that thing I didn't know is that the census info is held from other government entities for 78 years.

72 I think, but yeah a long time. I don’t know how easy it would be to get around that rule, though.

"Free persons" are not people on the run from the law.

Sorry, but you don't get to interpret the Constitution. SCOTUS does that.

A free person in the Constitutional era was anyone neither a slave nor an indentured servant. Indians were also exempt from the census.

Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution says nothing of excluding immigrants or even lawbreakers from the census count.

No one wants to exclude immigrants.

It shouldn't happen anywhere -- but we still need accuracy in the Census.

exactly. which is why we shouldn't be scaring people into non-participation, which is the goal.

Because federal law prohibits it, maybe?

you are referring to the same federal authorities that are able and willing to share DACA information with ICE despite that the federal government assured the DACA applicants such information would not be used against them? that trustworthy federal government

There's no law against sharing DACA information.

There is a law, a federal law, against sharing Census information.

That's a pretty simple concept, actually.
