Border Wall Questions

Given the left's victory on the statue and memorials issue, don't you think Trump's border wall is about to become history?

Wouldn't the left now seize on those border wall efforts to accuse Trump of pandering to racists?

Once the MSM links all the nazi organizations to the past support of the border wall and making a racist referendum, does anyone here think Trump is about to abandon the border wall fight?

I don't think Trump will back down from silly name calling. They try and drop the race card on Trump every day to no avail. We either secure our borders or continue to pay for the consequences. It is like leaving your house unlocked and the door open bad things will happen sooner or later.

The Mongols were horsemen. They couldn't ride their horses across the Great Wall of China. The Mexicans are more into cars, airplanes, and boats, as well as tunnels and ladders. The Great Wall of Trump might not be quite as effective.

Cars have the same weakness as horses.

I doubt many illegal immigrants have access to a plane.

Armed guards can patrol for tunnels and ladders.

Of course they can use boats, but it's slower.

The wall isn't going to cut out 100% of illegal border crossings, but even cutting 90% is worth it.

Besides, America should leave behind one last great monument before its civilization collapses.

So you're happy for all the lowlifes in Mexico to invade your country?

Not hardly. Most of the Mexicans I know are decent, hard working, family oriented, and devout Christians. Including my brothers wife and family. There are good and bad in all societies.

The wall is needed to keep the bad out and to know who is entering our country.

What is sad and pathetic is the exploitation of the decent hard working people of Mexico by the rich and powerful. Not only do they not provide safe working conditions but they don't pay them a decent wage. These rich and powerful exploit the people to get around paying their fair share of taxes as well as use them to force labor rates down in this country.

By monitoring who comes into our country and where they will be working hopefully we can crack down on and force these rich and pathetic people to stop exploiting these people and start paying their fair share of taxes.

1. No one is talking about keeping the cars from crossing the border. They'll still cross.
2. Ramos: 40% of undocumented immigrants come by air
3 Armed guards are expensive.
4. Boats have no trouble going around a wall. They can't build it in the ocean.
5. Is 5% worth it?
6. It would be a monument to stupidity and xenophobia.

1. No one is talking about keeping the cars from crossing the border. They'll still cross.

The wall forces cars to go through legitimate border crossings. If they're getting through without passports, that's not the fault of the wall.

That's addressing overstayers, which the wall isn't intended to stop anyway.

3. Armed guards are expensive.

That is true, though automation could reduce the costs.

4. Boats have no trouble going around a wall. They can't build it in the ocean.

Boats do have trouble going around the coastguard though. Either way, it increases the difficulty.

5. Is 5% worth it?

Depends on the cost of the wall, but probably not.

6. It would be a monument to stupidity and xenophobia.

Xenophobia is healthy.

Trumps wants his wall to be 1,000 miles long and 30-40 feet in height ... at a conservative cost of $21.5 billion dollars. (no pun intended)

This outlay could buy 1.5 Nimitz class aircraft carriers or 144 F35A fighters or construct 25 Trump Towers.

$21.5 billion in $1 bills would weigh 215 tons or cover 86 sq miles of land.

Trump Border Wall Samples Take Shape

Eight prototype wall sections are nearing completion along the U.S. border with Mexico. U.S. officials are sizing up the border wall models as part of President Trump's plan to build a wall along the border with Mexico. (Oct. 19)

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The last two of eight prototypes for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall took shape Thursday at a construction site in San Diego.

The prototypes form a tightly packed row of imposing concrete and metal panels, including one with sharp metal edges on top. Another has a surface resembling an expensive brick driveway.

Companies have until Oct. 26 to finish the models but Border Patrol spokesman Theron Francisco said the last two came into profile, with crews installing a corrugated metal surface on the eighth model on a dirt lot just a few steps from homes in Tijuana, Mexico.

As the crews worked, three men and two women from Nepal, ages 19 to 30, jumped a short rusted fence from Tijuana into the construction site and were immediately stopped by agents on horseback.

Francisco said there have been four or five other illegal crossing attempts at the site since work began Sept. 26.

So do mountains and rivers. Cars cross as they always have, at the highway crossings.

That's addressing overstayers, which the wall isn't intended to stop anyway.

and wouldn't. Of course, it wouldn't address most of the rest of them either.

That is true, though automation could reduce the costs.

Patrol the border with robots? Drones? Hey, we could do that without a wall, just fly drones around shooting anyone who dares to go into no man's land.

Boats do have trouble going around the coastguard though. Either way, it increases the difficulty.

Not too difficult with all of the open water.

Depends on the cost of the wall, but probably not.
Ever hear of a government project that cost less than expected?

Xenophobia is healthy.

Xenophobia is a mental aberration.

Then police the highway crossings. Duh.

If it works.

Not too difficult with all of the open water.

Not an excuse.

Nope. But that doesn't mean the idea itself is bad.

Xenophobia is a mental aberration.

Xenophobia is natural and healthy. It's what keeps "them" from invading "us".

Xenophobia is idiotic. No one is "invading" the US, and paranoia has never stopped a single invasion force...:ever.

By "invasion force", do you mean an army on the doorstep, planning to occupy your land? If it's got to that stage, it's too late for xenophobia.

Xenophobia is for earlier, when the strange people come poking around and relaying word back to their own country. You gotta nip that in the bud before they bring raiding parties.

Why not just cut to the chase and have enough personal at the border? If you had that you wouldnt need a wall.

Armed guards are "personnel", their private lives are "personal". Not criticizing, it's just for future reference.

The cost in wages of having that many guards at the border would almost certainly exceed the cost of a wall. Walls require construction and maintenance, but they don't require food, water, sleep, toilet breaks, or sick leave.

And now I think of it, you probably wouldn't need guards to check for tunnels. Just bury your foundations deep and install sensors to detect any tunneling.

The wall doesn't have to be 100% foolproof, it just has to save ICE enough money to justify its cost.

There are no ****ing raiding parts. There are no strange people. It is 2017, not 1200. What kind of "raiding parties" are you expecting?

Xenophobia is a delusional frame of mind

Border walls absolutely work. San Diego built one many years ago and saw a 90 to 95 % reduction in illegal crossings.
The border wall is just one part of the entire package to keep our southern border secure.

Take a look at this story:

San Diego Fence Provides Lessons in Border Control : NPR

you should read your link before you post it...embarrassing

Guess you read the wrong article.

Back then, Border Patrol agent Jim Henry says he was overwhelmed by the stream of immigrants who crossed into the United States illegally just in that sector.

"It was an area that was out of control," Henry says. "There were over 100,000 aliens crossing through this area a year."

Today, Henry is assistant chief of the Border Patrol's San Diego sector. He says apprehensions here are down 95 percent, from 100,000 a year to 5,000 a year, largely because the single strand of cable marking the border was replaced by double — and in some places, triple — fencing.

What is a border wall going to do for the 40%+ of people who did not cross the border illegally?
When they estimate a cost odf 20 billion you know thats low. Most likely it will be 30-40 billion, a total waste.

This quote is from your own link... "It didn't stop people from crossing," she says. "It just forced them to cross in the deadliest stretches of the border." This has been explained to you before. 40% of illegals fly and over stay visas. Why are you still pushing stupidity?

Unintended consequences:
Smith says the fence has actually created a sort of perverse and unintended consequence: It is keeping people in the United States who used to go back to Mexico.

"The men would come for a number of months out of every year and return (to Mexico)," Smith says. "Now, not only are the men staying, but they're bringing their families."

The wall doesn't have to be 100% foolproof, it just has to save ICE enough money to justify its cost.

There are long stretches of nothing along our borders, a wall will only slow down the crossing not stop it. Wall or not you need more personnel. That means that you are going to have the cost of the wall plus more personnel. If you do not increase bodies watching the border the wall will be nothing more than a speed bump.

A deep foundation wont stop people from tunneling. What you need is sensors to detect tunneling. Speaking of sensors; technology would be far more effective than some stupid wall.

And BTW my solution to personnel, is too move military bases to the borders and use the military to patrol the border. Oh and ICE does not patrol the border, thats the job of Border Patrol.

Here's a wild idea: Enforce the law against hiring illegals, and they'll go home!

I think that just might work, but....

Hey, we need them. They contribute to our economy, they're hard worker....

No, no, they're drug dealers and gang bangers.

So, enforce the law, but give them a chance to go back to the home country, show that they've been working and paying taxes here, and give them green card....

Oh, no, can't do that. Then, we'd have to abide by US labor laws. As it is now, they don't dare complain.

Oh, I know! Let's build a wall!

No, no, too expensive. Let's just talk about building a wall, and keep on doing what we've been doing, exploiting cheap labor and blaming economic problems on the illegals.

Now, there's a plan.

and if it doesn't work out?

Then we blame the problem on open borders liberals.

What if there aren't open borders liberals?

We invent them, of course.

It is 2017, not 1200.

You're living in fantasy land if you think that 800 years is enough to change human nature. Heck, it hasn't even changed global politics that much! Islam still seeks to conquer the West. Barbarians are still attacking innocent people. Europe is still ruled by tyrants.

What kind of "raiding parties" are you expecting?

In the Dark Ages, it would have been the Vikings. These days, it's ISIS. The principle remains the same: if you let them into your country, they'll take the place over. Are we going to be as feckless as the Saxons and Franks were?
