8 dead at Texas walmart

The cartel gets them across the border. After that the must make it to the truck on their own. His shirt was probably from before he was forced to be an "independent contractor". I know that harbor container truckers are complaining about having to pay the truck payments, only to have it repo'd if they fall I'll or can't keep up the payments.

Jimmy Hoffa is surely spinning in his concrete tomb.

What happened to those poor souls makes me so sick and so angry. I can hope only that those across the country who don't really understand how it is will have their eyes opened.

That is a noble position to take. I would be willing to help a rescue group. But you and I both know that man's inhumanity towards man will win out again.

Sadly

Happily, I don't know that. It may...but it may not. My hope is that those who perhaps live far away from the border and just don't know have now had their eyes opened a bit about human trafficking.

I saw that one of the deceased is a 19 y/o that was brought to the states from Guatamala when he was 3. He got into some trouble and was recently deported. A young friend that grew up with him said that he was distraught that he didn't know the country, or the language. He was trying to get back home when he wound up in the deadly semi trailer.

8 dead, about 30 injured are found in hot semitrailer in Texas in 'horrific' human-trafficking incident - ABC News

San Antonio semi trailer with 8 dead and 30 suffering from severe dehydration.

The trailer was refrigerated, but the system was not working. Driver has been arrested. I have to wonder why he didn't let them out. He would have received a much lesser sentencing for trafficking than he's going to get for murder.
Thread title is dishonest. It implies that Walmart was somehow actively involved and/or at fault.

I'm sorry, but I just can't find it in me to give the driver the benefit of the doubt. He just had to know he wasn't hauling car parts. I know it was a reefer, and I know it's insulated, and I know the unit wasn't working. Nobody can tell me he didn't hear the people inside at some point. I wouldn't last long in the jury pool on this. I had a similar reaction to a federal murder for hire case when I was in the jury pool years ago. Didn't last long in the pool on that one either.
I'm leaning toward that, too. He may not have known when he first picked up the trailer, but he had to have known at some point not too long afterward.

I chose a title that isn't very well thought out. <Disclaimer: Walmart has nothing to do with the trailer deaths.>

I don't like to be called dishonest. Fortunately, you were referring to my chosen title and not me.

As I said, I wouldn't make a good juror in this case. It's possible he actually didn't know. I just can't see how any sentient being could've missed all the clues that there were people in the trailer and not inanimate objects. Some that survived said they were yelling and beating on the trailer walls. If he truly didn't know while he was driving, he surely heard them when he parked at that Walmart. And he walked away.

They reported the Truck was headed to Houston, a Sanctuary City

It could go either way. Reefers are sealed and insulated to maintain -20° in 100° weather. It would hard for sound to penetrate that. He certainly wouldn't hear anything while he's driving.

He claims he didn't know they were there, and that honestly wouldn't shock me that much if he was telling the truth. Smugglers have been doing something similar for years. They find people that frequently cross the boarder and have a trusted status among border police. They then break into their vehicle on the mexico side undetected, and hide their cargo in the vehicle. The owner drives across the border without knowing what they have, and then once they get to the other side another set of smugglers break into the vehicle and get the cargo out. Usually it's done with drugs in the trunk of a normal car, but I could see them trying it with people.

One thing is certain, a border wall would not have prevented this. These people almost certainly passed through a guarded check point.

Why are you assuming the people were put in the truck on the Mexican side?
