This is good news. Hopefully other states follow suite.Sanctuary states and cities are a scourge that act as illegal alien magnets.

Texas Senate Passes Anti-Sanctuary Bill, Abbott To Sign | The Daily Caller
The Texas Senate passed Wednesday a bill that bans sanctuary cities throughout the state, clearing the last legislative roadblock for the controversial measure and sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk for final approval.
In a 20-11 party line vote, Republican state senators adopted the House version of a bill that prescribes tough penalties for local officials who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Senate Bill 4 also gives police the power to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they detain or arrest, including the subjects of traffic stops.
Abbott, who has backed the effort from the beginning, tweeted that he was getting his signing pen “warmed up” to make the bill a law.
SB4 is the nation’s first state-level law that bans sanctuary jurisdictions and threatens to jail police chiefs and county sheriffs if they refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Texas Republicans say the potential for jail time is necessary to dissuade officials in liberal jurisdictions from endangering public safety in the name of political gain.

Ah yes the smell of fascism against brown people. I bet all the white people will be asked to "show their papers" at traffic stops.

I'm ok with checking status if you are detained for an actual crime or arrested but for traffic stops that is simply stupid.

So everyone must carry proof of citizenship at all times when out in public?

Breaking immigration law is a crime.
Abetting law breakers in the act of breaking a law is a crime.

It's time that we start imposing criminal penalties for politicians who support sanctuary city laws.

I have to pull out my drivers license for a traffic stop. Who doesn't?

So everyone must carry proof of citizenship at all times when out in public?

Only if you're planning on committing a crime. And it's not like you're going to get deported if you just happen to not have proof on you. That's not how deportation works.

As a passenger no I don't carry my license with me. Glad you support fascism for brown skinned people.

How I feel about this depends on what "cooperate with federal immigration authorities" means. If it forces local governments to expend local resources on doing ICE's job, I am against it.

Oh cry me a river. I always carry my license with me. So does my wife. So does everyone that I know. Besides, what happens if you're suspected and you don't have a license? A background check is performed, likely on the spot, and if you're authorized to be here then you're fine.

How about just doing the simplest thing possible and letting ICE know when you have in custody an illegal alien? Instead of what they currently do, which is letting them go.

Hopefully that just applies to the driver. If it applies to passengers then that is going to be problematic. If it is just the operator of the vehicle then no biggie. In most states, like Texas, you have to prove citizenship or legal residence to get a drivers license anyway.

Get ****ed, Austin.

:peace

Is it that simple? How long does it take for ICE to pick someone up? Let's say a city cop briefly detains someone for questioning because they match a description of someone who just robbed a house. During questioning the officer learns the detainee is a foreigner without a valid visa. Another squad car brings the witness by who says the detainee is not the person they saw robbing the house.

Normally the officer would let the person go on their way and get back to looking for the robber. But, potentially, under this new law the officer will have to stop searching, arrest the illegal immigrant, and then his local police department will have to house, feed and guard him until ICE shows up to take custody. Is that minutes? Hours? Days? I don't know. But it does matter.

No, it doesn't.

So they are going to after local officials and cops, but of course not the businesses and employers in Texas that hire illegals?

Why am I not surprised.

The bill addresses a specific issue. The employers of illegals are already breaking the law.

And how long does a background check take? just admit you don't care about inconveniencing brown skinned people like the fascist you are.

dont see anything that specifies just the driver so that would mean the whole car can be checked.

If they have evidence that they're not supposed to be here, then what's the problem with your scenario? You have two crimes. Pick up the illegal alien and go on looking for the robber or call for backup.

Lol, you keep parroting that line as if I care if you call me a racist. Just follow the law. If you're not supposed to be here, then get out.

I have an ideological problem with local or state governments being forced to use their resources to enforce federal laws. Not just immigration. I feel that way about all laws. I realize it isn't a popular view.

It's a federal issue that impacts local communities. I don't see a good reason why local police shouldn't help.

If a local community wants to use its resources to help that is their prerogative. They can elect mayors, council members and sheriffs who hold that position. It is the forcing part I take issue with.

I sincerely hope that if any of my family members are kidnapped and taken across state lines that someone who thinks like you do isn't making the decision on whether to support the feds or not.
