Wages rise on California farms. Americans still don’t want the job

Solorio is one of a growing number of agricultural businessmen who say they face an urgent shortage of workers. The flow of labor began drying up when President Obama tightened the border. Now President Trump is promising to deport more people, raid more companies and build a wall on the southern border.

But the raises and new perks have not tempted native-born Americans to leave their day jobs for the fields. Nine in 10 agriculture workers in California are still foreign born, and more than half are undocumented, according to a federal survey.

It's time to revisit the issue of illegal workers from Mexico and points south, but, of course, that won't happen.

the idea is that immigrates would come to americas on visas to do the work of picking, aside from that many Americans on the younger scale do not work to do work with their hands.

people want high paying jobs so they can have a house, 2 cars and boat in the driveway by 25

Where are the robots?

That's what they wish for.
If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.

Farm workers is the sob story the pathetic LA Times uses as the test of President Trumps immigration policies and jobs?

No wonder the LAT is failing. More confirmation of why I stopped taking it 15 years ago.

Not just Trump.

You picked a part of the article that supports your narrative. Unfortunately, it seems that part isn't the whole story. For example, the grape grower's bigger problem is how much they are earning per ton of grapes. Some growers get much more than others and are able to offer higher wages.

Sounds kind of like the laws of supply and demand are working as they normally would.

Yes I followed the link. Unlike some here on DP, I don't comment before reviewing a linked article.

Here is a line in the LAT's drivel.

That has made California farms a proving ground for the Trump team’s theory that by cutting off the flow of immigrants they will free up more jobs for American-born workers and push up their wages.

Farm workers is the test of the Trump teams theory? Immigrants? Did they mean to say, cutting off the flow of illegal aliens? Did the LAT mean to suggest the only job illegal aliens take are farm worker jobs?

Again, another pathetic POS screed from the cesspool of the LA Times.

This article only confirms what we have known and that is farmers have relied on their ability to use foreign labor to circumvent the wage demand of the native labor market. Now that their foreign labor pool is shrinking they will now need to function like any other industry and that includes competing for labor and paying enough to secure that labor. Their advantageous exploitation of foreign labor to bypass the labor market is over and growing pains are to be expected. In the end the industry will succeed and be filled by machines or native employees.

There are approx 1 million people in California currently unemployed and collecting benefits. While not massively higher, the state of California remains a full percentage point higher than the national average. If there are jobs available and people unwilling to work those jobs, you dont have a manpower problem...you have a benefits problem. If you are providing benefits to people that refuse to take on work...you have a problem. Importing illegal workers who will work for less that will send large portions of their income out of the country to bolster mejicos economy does not solve your real 'problem'.

Yes, some make more per ton, and so are able to pay their workers more, but Americans still aren't interested in the jobs.

Yes, they mean illegal aliens. No, they didn't suggest that the only job illegals would do are farm worker jobs. they did suggest that farmers are having a difficult time finding workers due to Obama and Trump's crackdown on illegal aliens.

They also mentioned that citizens don't seem to be willing to take those jobs, even at the higher rates of pay.

1. Wages going up. Good. Need to get them higher.

2. Too many illegals still infesting U.S. Bad.

Trump is in the process of fixing #2. Good.

Wages will get higher as illegals are removed.

This problem took a hundred years to develop.

It will take a while to fix it.

So they admit breaking the law by hiring illegal aliens and taking advantage of their status to pay low wages. And this is ok?

And for the most part employers aren't interested in hiring them... lack of work ethic.

Yes.

No, it's not OK. It's a serious problem, one that has been ignored for decades, and one that won't go away easily or simply.

If they came in illegally they need to return home to get a visa. Trump needs to create some sort of special visa for illegals to go home, obtain, and return to their jobs/careers/wives/families. But, it's not about fixing the problem with Trump. It's about punishing the illegals, proving to the world that they are dangerous. Of which cooroboration to Trump's bigoted ways, he desperately craves. His executive order authorizes an immigration task forces and the construction of detainment facilities across the border. He's not talking about a path to citizenship. His AG, is an aging bigot, who doesn't support a path to citizenship and thinks the country needs to be whiter.

Fortunately, undocumented people have rights and his "deportation task forces" should face some legal challenge.

Also, you are crazy if you think you're going to find grown Americans willing to do hard manual labor for low wages.

Yes, they need to go home and get a visa. They need to be able to go home, show that they've been working and paying taxes in the US, that they have no felony convictions, and return with a valid visa and quit looking over their shoulders for the Migra.

Unfortunately, no one in the administration, certainly not that AG you describe, has suggested such a thing.

Americans do take hard jobs. Who fights wildfires? That has to be at least as hard as picking fruit, maybe harder.

"Citizens" haven't been willing to take farm labor jobs for 100 years. The LAT article is BS.

Lack of work ethic equals lack of paycheck

Maybe they can get hungry....

And that might spur their work ethic a bit....heh?

Hunger used to be a great motivator.....

Used to be.......so sad

The problem you are purposefully overlooking is, illegal aliens don't only take jobs "Americans just won't do", they also displace American workers in many other skilled labor positions, driving wages down. But you already knew that.

I myself worked farm labor jobs at one time, and I'm still not 100 years old. Yes, citizens did work farm labor jobs at one time. It hasn't always been illegal labor.

Yes, I knew that.
But, if the law were to be enforced against hiring illegals, and if the illegals were to come back with legal status, then they wouldn't be so inclined to work for crap wages.
