Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is escalating a standoff with Austin's sheriff over so-called "sanctuary cities" policies and now says he will seek new laws to remove her from office.

Abbott said Wednesday on "Fox and Friends" that Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez will lose her job unless she reverses plans to stop honoring all federal immigration detainers in her jail starting in February. The governor has already said he will immediately withhold state grant dollars.

Abbott doesn't have the power to remove local officials. But Texas Republicans have filed multiple bills that would punish local governments for not arresting or detaining immigrants living in the country illegally.

It's amazing how conservatives had a problem with big government forcing themselves down others throats for not accepting gay marriage but all of a sudden approve when it suits their needs.

That's not new.

This isn't about forcing government law. The state has every right to brutally and severely punish any city that doesn't abide by state law.

I have been watching this situation. The Sheriff is an idiot. She wants attention and she will probably get attention, just not the kind of attention she wants.

I am really curious to know if you have any opinion about the topic of the thread?

And I've been fortunate to meet Greg Abbot on a couple of occasions. He's a smart cookie.

So, I assume, you not wanting to be one of the hypocrites you're "amazed" with here, you either support both government actions or you support both actions by "principled" individuals. The only question left unanswered, conveniently for you, is which one it is.

I wonder how this fits in with the EO Trump signed today that included sanctuary cities?

No you really aren't but you're faking it quite horribly.

I actually am very interested. I just read another article about two XOs signed today in regards to immigration. One of the orders was directly related to this.

It makes the Sheriff more noticeable to the DOJ which could result in the expedited of an investigation.

He doesn't strike me as one that would pick a fight unless he has his ducks together.

The Sheriff should know when to hold and know when to fold. This time? Fold.

If the Governor tells you to enforce the laws, you enforce the laws. Don't wanna do that? Consider a major career change.

Our local news was reporting that Austin officials were thinking of raising taxes to make up for the state money to be withheld. That's socialists for ya.

Maybe they can use it to pay the legal fees of the officials breaking the law.

They are specialists at Hypocrisy, nothing new.

Greg Abbott is going after an Austin sheriff. This is business as usual. Perry did this going out last year. Abbott is not mad about the sanctuary city. He wants to try to replace the Democrat sheriff.

Tillman Fertitta donated $150,000, $104,000 He runs Landry's Restaurants.
Doylene Perry donated $100,000 She is the wife of Bob Perry. He builds neighborhoods, CHEAP!
Charles Butt donated $100,000 He runs HEB. A supermarket chain.

People like the contributors above really run immigration reform. These are the people who oppose reform. Going after those democrats who are soft on this or soft on that is a two stroke attack. It gives them a chance to flip a seat, and they look tough on immigration. If we were really tough on it we would shoot alot more people at the border. Honestly, we hardly shoot any border crossers.

Perry went after Rosemary Lehmberg...a DA for Travis county who was caught on tape being a drunk, belligerent ass after being arrested on a DUI charge.

How do you know this? And why can't Abbott be both eager to enforce existing law regarding sanctuary cities and try to replace the Dem sheriff?
