The tone of the article begins in a rather critical and skeptical tone... but then the article proceeds to detail, with pictures, a region WITH a wall around SoCal and Arizona, a very effective looking wall which is noted as having dramatically reduced illegal border crossing in the area. It ends up being a sort of ironic tribute to how yes, a proper wall can actually help secure the border a great deal... interesting read.

While a fence can be effective in populated areas the vast majority of the border is sparsely populated and the fence doesn't work nearly as well in those areas. For most of the border what is needed for security is manpower and electronic monitoring.

It's astonishing to find an article which admits what should be a mind-numbingly obvious fact: walls are somewhat effective at keeping people out.

I'll throw in the military adage that obstacles only stop an enemy's advance if they are actively defended. Otherwise they delay and slow an advance but can eventually be circumvented.

So clearly we'd need sensors and cameras, and a beefed-up border patrol as well.

Still, I hear a lot of moaning about the projected cost.... I don't know why, we send more $$ in aid to countries that hate us...

The person they quoted in that article actually says that a physical wall won't happen, and he's right. Most illegal aliens in the country actually enter legally and overstay their visas.

Not quite correct.
Illegal entry
Main article: Illegal entry § United States

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 6–7 million immigrants came to the United States via illegal entry, accounting for probably a little over half of the total population.[23] There are an estimated half million illegal entries into the United States each year.[23][24]

A common means of border crossing is to hire people smugglers to help them across the border. Those operating on the U.S.-Mexico border are known informally as coyotajes (coyotes).[24]

As to whether the physical wall will actually be built, that is chiefly a matter of political will, on which I am disinclined to speculate. I support building, patrolling and enforcing a barrier of some kind, but am open to discussion on its exact nature.

Most of those whining about the projected costs of a border wall are pro-illegals and open borders loons who don't want a wall on our border. They don't care if the wall costs 1 dollar a mile or a 100 million a mile.Whining about the costs is just a tactic meant to justify their opposition and nothing more.

We had a great interest in keeping people and drugs out. There's a lot of people with a lot more money and power that have an extremely great interest in keeping the people and drugs flowing in. The cynical side of me feels like there is no question on who will win.

Yes, walls are very effective. Except against the 60% of unauthorized immigrants who, it turns out, overstay their visas.

Visa Overstays Are Today's Immigration Crisis | National Review

Plus, as should surprise no one, there are unintended negative consequences of building a wall. One of them is that it prevents migrant workers from making round trips -- meaning that unauthorized immigrants enter the US and stay here, rather than come to the US for seasonal work, and leave for the off-season.

In fact, if you really want to keep Mexicans out of the US, you should help develop industry and manufacturing and jobs in Mexico itself, perhaps by allowing American companies to take advantage of workers who earn $3.50/hr. Oh, wait....

I look at it as a job creator as well.

You do realize that your solution is to screw Americans out of a job by allowing companies to outsource so that people won't come here illegally to screw Americans out of a job? The simple solution to visa overstays is to cut off countries with the most offenders until their citizens return back to their countries.

Not most, but around 40% which is considerable
