Germany needed the intestines of more than 3 million cows to wage “total war” against England.
The concept of “total war,” the mass bombing of civilian targets, began in World War I with the Zeppelin bombing of English cities. To prevent gas leaks, the hydrogen bags in the Zeppelins were made of cow guts, whose collagen acted as a natural glue in creating large bags from many intestines. Each of the 13 airships in the German war fleet required intestines from more than a quarter million cows. To reserve the guts for war use, sausage-making was temporarily banned.
The Zeppelins as bombers eventually became obsolete after the English developed special tactics and incendiary bullets to down the airships.

If Germans had embraced vegetarianism, the barbarities of total war might have been delayed for many years.
