Well, people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson weren't traitors to the United States, so I don't see why we'd get rid of them.
But they were traitors to their country.
The difference is that George, Ben, John, and Tom won their war. If Lincoln and Grant would have lost the war, and they nearly did,we would today be tearing down their statues.
What they all had in common is that they fought for a cause they believed in. Somehow I don't see that as being traitors.
