Public health officials say spread of coronavirus in the US is inevitable

A top U.S. public health official has called the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. inevitable, while President Trump called the situation “very well under control.”

“Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in the United States,” Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Tuesday. “It’s not a question of if this will happen, but when this will happen.”

Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, speaking at a Health and Human Services press conference Tuesday said, “It’s likely this virus will cause a pandemic,” and the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s infectious disease chief, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said the world is “teetering very, very close” to a pandemic.

So far, over 80,000 people around the world have been infected with the virus and more than 2,700 have died, mostly in China. There are at least 53 cases in the United States and hundreds of others spread across Asia, the Middle East and Europe, with cases surging to 280 in Italy and nearly 1,000 in South Korea.

“People are concerned about this situation and rightfully so,” Messonnier said. “I was having breakfast with my family this morning and I told my children that while I didn’t think they were at risk right now, we as a family need to prepare for the significant risk.”

Strap in everyone - also go ahead and purchase food ahead of time in case people seriously panic

A vaccine is a few weeks away. They're doing human volunteer tests now.

American made, of course.

I believe that is not correct. They should be starting testing in 6 to 8 weeks but an actual vaccine is many
months away.

CDC Recommends

While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat:
It’s currently flu and respiratory disease season and CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
If you are a healthcare provider, be on the look-out for people who recently traveled from China and have fever and respiratory symptoms.
If you are a healthcare provider caring for a COVID-19 patient or a public health responder, please take care of yourself and follow recommended infection control procedures.
If you have been in China or have been exposed to someone sick with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you will face some limitations on your movement and activity. Please follow instructions during this time.

Your cooperation is integral to the ongoing public health response to try to slow spread of this virus. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient.

Did she also discuss with her brother Rod Rosenstein - former DOJ Deputy Attorney General - that now would be a good time to counter the message of the Trump administration and HHS Secretary Alex Azar press conference?!? /s

4 days of food won't hurt because people will probably make a run on the grocery store.

Well it didn't snow much here in the NE. We didn't have a single milk and bread panic before the storms so I guess we need to panic about this. Thankfully we have dems who refuse to seal ou
r borders to protect us from pandemic.

Seal our borders completely? Like shutting down all travel to and from the US? That should certainly help the stock market.... food supplies, manufacturing, etc. I think that's an excellent plan for the the administration... Probably wouldn't have to wait till November to rid ourselves of the idiocy...

That was seal our borders not close them. Derp!

How does one seal our borders but not close them... I gotta hear this plan...

You are on a political forum and have never seen numerous common knowledge discussions on sealing the border?

You mean like the southern border? How many cases of coronavirus does Mexico have? The biggest threat is from travelers arriving by air? Should we shut down all international flights? What about ports?

If you’re only doing clinical trials when a pandemic is underway then it’s already too late. The CDC’s contingency plan for managing a pandemic hinges on a stockpile of at least 20 million doses of a pre-developed vaccine being ready for distribution.

Mondera is projecting their vaccine will not be available for at least a year...
