Would you surrender to a general quarantine order?

Thousands of Americans and others returning from China have been quarantined on US military bases. There is the video of the woman screaming when her and her husband are stuffed into a small box on the back of a pickup truck in China to be hauled off for quarantine.

So what would you do in this scenario?

The government declares that you and everyone in your city or section of your city is to quarantined. This will be tens of thousands of people. The order is that everyone who resides there must report to a certain address before the end of the day and will be taken to a military base to be quarantined for an indefinite period of time. Or you can call and they will pick you up. You may bring 1 average size suitcase, nothing else. However, you are confident that you know a way to get out of town and away from there along with your family if you have one. You are given little other information.

Would you surrender to be quarantined? Or would you try to get out of there?

Escape and infect everyone I possibly can.

If the whole city was being quarantined there would be no reason to report to a military base as a practical matter unless you needed medical treatment

Maybe the whole city needs to be burned down or sprayed with some toxic chemical/pesticide for some reason. Of course you won't be told the reason because that could spread panic.

It depends.

For a country where I believe the government generally tries to serve the public interest and provides medical care for the sick like the United States? Yes.

For a country like the People's Republic of China where people who are considered troublesome for the government in any way are herded into concentration camps to languish and die of disease, malnutrition, exposure or abuse? Never.

In true emergency situations, people become cattle to be managed, manipulated and to not be startled - or frightened - as motivation, whichever is the best way to control the herds. Sadly, there is little reason to believe what the government tells us when we are in the cattle mode to them.

If you and who is in your household is healthy, sending you to an internment camp on a mass scale is not in YOUR best interests or those of your household. It is SINGULARLY for the protection of other people at YOUR risk. While their motives make sense, just how far should we risk our lives for their risk calculations of all those cattle have to be killed because at least one of them have hoof and mouth disease? Therefore, every cow in the entire large scale area much be killed.

I'm not necessarily agreeable to that. The question is, like rounding up the Jews in Germany, the government doesn't tell mass groups of people they are being sent to their death for some greater good for everyone else.

Shoving everyone into an internment camp isn't how quarantine works. In fact, confining everyone to a small space is a good way to spread the disease even faster. A real quarantine involves everyone staying at home and avoiding human contact as much as possible. So your hypothetical question doesn't make any sense.

That has definitely been the attitude of some infected with AIDS. Some are on record confessing their goal is to infect as many others as possible (especially the young, innocent and gullible) before the inevitable messy end.

So built a wall around the entire city with machine gun nests every hundred yards?

"Stay at home" has been a dismal failure in China, where it is now considered the spread is not only no longer stoppable in China, but increasing numbers of experts say it will now reach virtually everyone in the world.

Like Felis Leo said it would depend on the type of government. Quarantined in China? Hell no. Quarantined in the US? yes. I wouldn't want to infect the rest of the country with a dangerous incurable deadly disease.

Heck, I stayed home just having a severe cold.

Pretty sure Id try and escape. Nothing good has ever happened when a gov. herds its citizens to a place of "safety".

The current military quarantines are for people returning from foreign soil. It's to prevent them from entering non-contaminated areas, i.e. the entire U.S.

If the outbreak were already on U.S. soil, then they would quarantine towns and cities while instructing people to stay in their homes. People wouldn't be relocated to military bases unless there were human resource issues. There'd be no advantage otherwise.

I would not be caught dead in China or frankly anywhere in East Asia right now, let alone Wuhan. The people coming back from there will have to suffer the inconvenience of quarantine to make sure they don't infect an entire country. Those are the breaks in this day and age, especially with a virus that may have an incubation period of 10+ days.

I'd accept a city wide quarantine, as long as I had supplies. If supplies started to run out and things got desperate, I would find a way to sneak out. I'd also need to know that the authorities were doing everything in their power to fix the problem.
