Alcohol Deaths Have Risen Sharply, Particularly Among Women - The New York Times

An analysis of death certificates over nearly two decades contained several troubling findings.

The number of women drinking dangerous amounts of alcohol is rising sharply in the United States. That finding was among several troubling conclusions in an analysis of death certificates published Friday by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The analysis looked at deaths nationwide each year from 1999 through 2017 that were reported as being caused at least partly by alcohol, including acute overdose, its chronic use, or in combination with other drugs.

The death rate tied to alcohol rose 51 percent overall in that time period, taking into account population growth. Most noteworthy to researchers was that the rate of deaths among women rose much more sharply, up 85 percent. In sheer numbers, 18,072 women died from alcohol in 2017, according to death certificates, compared with 7,662 in 1999.

Bottoms up, ladies.

We should, uh, ban alcohol.

No one needs it.

We tried that once & it resulted in Al Capone.

Until about twenty years ago, when a woman died of alcohol, it was recorded as "hysterics" to protect the husband.

When I look at some of my daughter's millennial girlfriends' marital prospects in terms of their millennial boyfriends, I think I can see why they might be tempted to turn to the bottle!

It’s almost like banning things people want is a bad idea....

As our society progresses toward true equality independent of race, sex, age, some of the negative effects of being a privileged white male will rub off. Higher substance abuse, and lower life expectancy are the negatives that come with all the benefits. On a whole, I am guessing most women are living a better life in 2017 vs 1999.

Interestingly, America has just last year hit a milestone: More women are in the workforce than men.

So the takeaway would seem to be,

"Boys - if you're looking for a girl, get a job!"

(of course the above has been true from time immortal ... )

You know what caused a massive decline of alcoholism and abuse?

Prohibition!

We tried that once & it resulted in Al Capone.

So what?

No government policy has zero negative consequences. The truth is prohibition saved many lives and the fact that some people worked the system for profit is irrelevant

And we're trying it now, getting El Chapo et al.

We also got massive declines in drug abuse until the 2000s when liberals popped out of the rocks they were hiding under in order to let drug dealers out of prison and not arrest people who possessed

Hold on my friends.

The problem with these stats is the nature of the "study," which is just basic statistical evaluation of what is mentioned as cause of death on a death certificate.

Usually we are talking about a form with arguably 3 valuations. The immediate cause, 1-3 underlying causes, the significant health conditions contributing.

It is easy (and predictable) for an organization like the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism take the stats and run with them, but you have to look at all these values then do a little homework before determining that "Alcohol Deaths Have Risen Sharply, Particularly Among Women." The study does not mention exactly where all those values were found, or applied any weight to the difference between underlying cause and conditions contributing, or really any evaluation of the immediate causes of death.

In fairness we cannot dismiss it all, but we cannot take it at face value either.

Science and methodology used to be better than this.

Ah, so you actually have no idea, whatsoever, how the WOD actually worked/works.

Good of you to be so up front about that.

If you watch TV, everyone is drinking hard liquor, and especially women’s characters being shown tossing back double shots. On TV it’s colored water. In a bar it’s 80 proof liquor. What can possibly go wrong?

I know exactly how it worked. By putting drug users and pushers in prison.

The number of drug users had gone down from 25 million in the 80s to 14 million in 2007 despite the massive population increase.

It wasn’t until the new philosophy pushed by the left that said “punishing criminals for their free and voluntary choice to violate the law is wrong” that drug use started going back up

Have you been listening to hard left?

Women are bad ass! They can beat up male special forces operators and throw back whisky, and be CEOs and all that.

And in fact being a woman is so cool a man can be one too as long as he identifies as such

Oh well I guess liquoring up is good for you. Never mind. Continue to tell women to throw back doubles I guess

Which was utterly, completely and totally ineffective. I used have to fight in the WOD, and saw it up close and personal. It was a racket. A scam designed to fool suckers.

Irrelevant to anything I've posted.

What a deliciously laughable lie.

Why do you hate freedom and liberty?

Ok dude. Whatever.
Irrelevant to anything I've posted.
it’s the only thing relevant

What a deliciously laughable lie.

Why do you hate freedome and liberty?

Freedom can only exist when people are regulated towards virtue. A truly libertine culture simply destroys society and makes us less free

LOL! So you admit that not only do you have no idea of how the WOD works/worked, but you haven't the first idea as to what the word 'freedom' means.

Why do you hate America?

Why do you hate America?

Why do you not know how to type anything but sophistry.

Why are you trying to use 'sophistry', a term you clearly don't understand?

“a deliberately invalid argument displaying ingenuity in reasoning in the hope of deceiving someone“
