Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.[W:124]

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

Yea, some people need their meds. A few of my friends cannot function properly without their medication. And I need my ADHD meds to concentrate in school.

Renae, I'm sure you mean well with this, but you are wrong. Antidepressants save more lives than they take, by a long shot. Not everyone can take them, I'm one of those people, they make me worse, not better. But for many many many people they do a wonderful job of dealing with an awful condition.

If you want to see less people on meds, make society less of a mental illness manufacturer. Don't shame people for trying to deal with the hand they were given however they can...that is the definition of "dealing with life".

If anything, I think more people should be on meds. That’s a little tongue in cheek but I really do know people in my family that I think would benefit from them but I don’t think they’d take it well if told them that.

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

Absolutely they do, my GF works in mental health as a counselor, and I have worked in an administrative management role in the field in the past. Anti depressants are life savers. The groups that complain about them are of the fringe, like the "church" of Scientology. The ignorance that some have about this is really dangerous.

Ya'll all ****ing blind. I'm not anti science, I'm looking at the big picture and asking "wait, somethings not right here".

What happened in the 1980's? SSRI's were introduced. What's happened since then? Suicides rise, mass shootings, **** like that.

But yeah, I'm the anti-science one, sure.

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

Look, when Kate Spade died, I was sad for her family, how could someone with so much (loving family, success in the Fashion industry) do such a thing. Oh mental illness. Damn, sucks. I mean seriously. It was Bourdain's suicide this morning that really made me mad.

Dude was a rock star of chef's as it were, a great host, wonderful travel shows... and he just, killed himself.

We've long suspected that there is a link between these shooting rampages in schools and other places, many many of them are on brain drugs (catch all for the myriad of drugs for depression, bi-polar and what not) and now another suicide in the news.

It's like every bad feeling has a drug ready to fix it! People don't deal with their problems they pill them away, and those pills break your brain.

This, is the epidemic that we need to focus on, not gun control, not diagnosing and codifying everything as a "You suffer from..."

No you suffer from "Not dealing with life". ARE there people with real mental disorders? Absolutely, and they need treatment and help. Giving people a pill and saying "Go be drugged and happy" is killing us.

In other news, a very high proportion of patients who die with cancer were treated with anti-cancer medicines!

We're all blind, guys! We're all blind to the truth!

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

You didn’t hurt me and I’m not the one lashing out. Good thing I’m currently on my meds. :D

I'm not lashing out, I'm flabbergasted at the reaction here. Fine, I guess I'm "wrong". I'm out, ya'll have your circle jerk about how all these pills good for you and that CRAZY Renae is anti science and not one to talk.

Whatev's.

If you consider yourself born the wrong gender you shouldn't have a hard time being able to picture someone being born with a chemical imbalance in their brain that can be fixed with medication.

Good grief...why do you even post here if you go nuclear any time anyone has a differing opinion. I think people are showing a lot of restraint in response to an wildly ignorant, unscientific rant about something that takes folks a lot of courage to admit they need. You an anti-vaxer too? Calm down.

Wow, that hurt. Seriously.

I was asking questions, because mass shootings, suicides all linked to people on these drugs. All the drugs started coming into mass use in the 80's about the time the rise in suicides and such started going up.

Guess we shouldn't ask those questions if there is a correlation between the two. What a dumb thing, to question if there is a correlation.

Stop taking your hormone pills, Steve, or whatever the **** your actual name is, I've decided it's not good for you.

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

Duh.

These drugs are linked to depression. That's why they are prescribed.
Being that suicide is linked to depression... it would be virtually impossible for there not to be a correlation between people who use these drugs and suicide.

You obviously don't understand how any of this works.

I had a cousin that had depression and was severely bi-polar, he was a great guy, a good father. Unfortunately, some people go through a cycle where they are medicated, and they feel good, so they stop medicating and bad things happen, and they get caught in a spiral. My cousin killed himself, it was, and is still rough on all of us. Your flippant attitude on this subject, mixed in with your ignorance about it helps no one.

Don't understand why you are hurt. You should just "deal with life".

(Starting to understand yet?)

What a stupid pov, is that what you all think?

WOW.

Seriously WOW.

****ing hell, I thought more highly of all y'all.

Hold on, you think, I'm questing if someone can't have a brain imbalance that meds could fix?

Damn...

How's this,

I'm questioning if the DRUGS being USED are SAFE.

I'm asking if the prevalence is NECESSARY or is it quick easy out of facing problems "here take this pill..."

I'm not questioning mental illness.

Damn, y'all ALL need to get off that track.

Exactly. The OP has a long established record of this. Perhaps its projection or a misplaced defense mechanism.

But, the pure ignorance shown by the OP is just terrible and yeah, we are all showing a great deal of restraint.

Renae, we don't try to "mansplain" to you about your transition and all you are going through, nor do we pass judgement on you for it.

But, you are doing exactly that to people that suffer depression and people that know a hell of a lot more about medication than you ever will, and it really doesn't make you look like a very good person.

I understood your post and I thought it was strange for you to be on the right side of an issue for once.

You aren't asking questions. You're making a bunch of assertions with nothing to back them up with. Fact is, medication like anti-depressants help lots of people. It's good that we have these kind of meds available to us now. And I find your position extremely hypocritical, coming from someone that has undergone medical treatment for their condition.

Safe? Safer than what? Going untreated and risk suicide?

How about everyone talk to their doctor to work it out, and everyone else mind their own damn business? Every drug has side effects, every single one.

CDC: Suicides increased by more than 30 percent since 1999 in half the states | Nation | omaha.com

No, you're not wanting to have the question asked, because you took it wrong.

No...you lack knowledge, tact, diplomacy and empathy, all wrapped in a giant dose of ignorance.

Shame on you.

Re: Anti-depressants and other brain drugs, the real threat to society.

Same here, I take a very low level amount of ADHD meds, without it, I can't focus on work. Our brains are different, and for the needs of the modern world, they are a godsend.

Yes they can be. Without my meds, my anxiety and tendency toward catastrophic thinking would eat me alive.

I doubt that these pills 'break the brain' although any meds may cause side effects and do not work equally well on all that take them. IMHO, those that seek treatment for OCD, depression, bipolar or ADHD and use these 'broken brain' meds should be consulted as to their effectiveness - I would imagine that a large number of them appreciate their help.

You may be discounting the distinct possibility that depite the use of these meds (or having not taken them as prescibed) that folks with 'broken brains' are more apt to be suicidal or, a small subset of them, even homicidal.

For many, with brain chemistry or mood disorders, 'dealing with life' is made far easier with the use of meds specific to their symtpoms. The alternative (of self healing?) to 'just deal with life' (without any meds?) may resut in even more suicides and/or homicides.
