Trump just sold us all out on drug pricing

Donald Trump and PhRMA (the big pharma industry organization) president Steve Ublk

The New York Times reports that the Trump White House is about to put out an executive order on drug pricing, and it looks as if the whole thing were basically written by big pharma. In other words, America, we've just been sold out on the price of drugs. According to the report and similar reporting from Kaiser Health News and Politico, a draft executive order includes nothing to curb prices. Instead, drug companies would be in line to get more power to charge monopoly prices overseas and be allowed to give even fewer discounts to hospitals with poor patients. And the administration is promising to roll back regulations that pharma has complained about. Nothing for the American people; everything for the American corporations.

This toothless order is the result of asking some of the richest CEOs in America what to do about a problem they don't want to solve. And it settles something about the Trump administration. If you were hoping that the populist Trump from the campaign trail would keep some of the promises he made to his base, you can stop now. Trump is not for his base; he's not for anyone. He's a corporatist, and he will continue letting corporations make decisions that his White House is either too lazy or too incompetent to make, to the detriment of Americans, whether they voted for him or not.

By the time Trump and the GOP are finished, healthcare for the middle class and the poor in the US will resemble healthcare in Haiti. Under the GOP AHCA, anyone and everyone needing healthcare and ℞ will experience paroxysmal sticker-shock.

Maybe he can provide some cream to ease the pain? :2razz:

Government in bed with big pharma!!?? No! I don't believe it.

Why are you scared of economic freedom?

Why are you scared of economic freedom?

"A privately held startup, Turing sparked controversy earlier this year after news reports that it had raised the price of Daraprim (pyrimethamine), a 62-year-old drug used for protozoal infections, to $750 a tablet from $13.50 after acquiring it."

It's not 'economic freedom', it's predatory price gouging. Real economic freedom, a level playing field with no protection, would bankrupt those vicious bastards

A 62-year-old drug still patent protected is the fault of crooked politicians n BOTH sides of the aisle.

LOL no it isn't, unless you're blaming democrats for losing elections.

And it wasn't even protecting the company that developed it. That evil bastard bought the right to produce it from a company that was making money at $13 and change, and jacked it up to $750.
Hope he rots in jail. I hope there's someone down the block from him that can't get his AIDS drugs anymore since it got so expensive.

What? Are you suggesting that democrats have been losing elections for sixty-two years?

What? You think 61 years is ok? 60 years? 50 years? 40 years? Or haven't Dems ever won elections??

You can't honestly blame democrats for legislation that republicans pass maggie. You know this.

Nonsense. Pricing your goods at what you see fit is economic freedom.

What am I missing here? Trump's working group, according to the link in the OP
"To solve the crisis of high drug prices, the group discussed"

I didn't read anywhere which stated that any firm policy proposals had been handed to congress or that the discussions had ended. Now, if all these ideas get bundled into an actual bill or even a list of goals handed to Congress, then the OP title makes more sense. Is the suggestion being made by the OP - a working group on how to lower pharma costs should not include ideas from the pharma industry? This seems perplexing. This sounds like more hysteria over something for no reason other than it involves Trump. I'm going to finish my coffee and calmly enjoy my morning since, in all reality, the sky isn't falling.

I blame both sides of the aisle. Did you not read that??

This change isn't coming from both sides of the aisle, it's only coming from one side of the aisle.

You're muddying the waters. Why can't your side take responsibility for what it does?

Do tariffs and patents have a roll in your 'economic freedom'?

But yet, the Trumpy Guppies will still not see that they were lied to repeatedly by this con artist. It's amazing.

There is something wrong with you - starting with blinding partisanship. Republicans are not responsible for there being at least a 62-year patent protection on this drug... BOTH sides are.

Okay, thanks for specifying. That doesn't change whether Republicans are responsible for this executive order which serves as government helping big pharma exploit customers for excessive profit, the topic of the OP.

Just order your drugs from Canada. That option still exists for now. If Trump wants to make the domestic market non-competitive, then big pharma can lose out.

The people I feel the most for in this situation are the poor and those in the ER rooms who aren't going to get life saving medications due to HMOs cutting costs.

Glad he ran as "draining the swamp" and against "pay for play." This is another sucker punch in a career of sucker punches. It's exactly what us "liberal elite know-it-alls" warned America about Trump.

Except when it has to do with monopolies. If I am the only game in town, the government has a right to regulate the price that I charge. When it comes to life-saving drugs, the government has a duty to regulate the price.

Libertarian philosophy would have those who needed dialysis die if they couldn't afford treatment.

All has been decided and the big pharma lobbyists won. Of course they won. None of us can directly lobby Trump, and lobbyist visits to the White House are now state secrets under Trump.

Congress? Trump stated he will issue an executive order giving big pharma all they asked for.
