I knew this was coming, although I didn't realize how close we were. We could very well see this within our lifetimes. Now to see how many more of my predictions based upon this will occur.

PLEASE DON'T TELL THE FEMINISTS. *obvious joke*

I wonder if a baby that spent weeks in one of these would grow up to be "normal"?

To be honest, that video is kind of freaky. I am happy it can help newborns though.

Only one way to find out.

Although if you have a premature infant...they're not going to be normal either. They do tend to have issues that manifest when they start growing up.

I do know that something like this could have helped my wife when she was having her children. Her body wanted to give birth well before they were fully cooked. One of them she was in trendelenburg position for months to keep from dropping the kid before it was developed enough to survive.

Something like this could have solved the problem if it tests out to work as well as advertised.

I expect it will be a while before such an option is available for humans, and perhaps only life and death scenarios (at least at first). It seems that there are still many unknowns about development in the womb, both biological and psychological.

Granted, but the fact remains that this is the first steps to finding out what the results of this are going to be. Before this, it was purely the realm of theoretical. Now it's a reality. The first steps are trial and error. Will this have an effect on the lamb once it's fully cooked and if so what are they? Will something else need to be tried? Something adjusted?

Before, this was science fiction. Now it's a reality and it's time to work out the kinks.

Yes. My reservations are focused strictly on humans. Sure, there's a lot to learn from animal studies, but as this concerns development (not simply physiology), what we learn will be of limited value. At some point, the "trial and error" will occur with humans, and that always brings up important questions.

Actually we can learn a lot from the animal testing phases. Animals do develop emotional and developmental issues. Seeing what happens with lambs and then progressing up the food chain until you get into primates and you have a better inkling of what's going on.

And here's something else to consider. Premature human infants develop developmental issues the less time they're in the womb. The more premature they are...the more severe the problems.

I doubt that they'll get it right straight off the starting line. But that's not a good reason to not pursue the technology.

If this technology comes along, it could change the abortion debate. If we could put a baby that was scheduled to be aborted in one of these wombs, then the issue wouldn't be about murder or killing an innocent life anymore.

Unless the dad is wanting the child, you still have the issue of where does a child rejected by the mother go? Do we flood the orphan system just to keep the abortion rate down?

There would have to be a MASSIVE reworking of the adoption system as it exists here in America currently. A popular ad where I live is "You don't have to be perfect to be perfect parents".

Which honks me off no end since you have to be so perfect that you make Mary Poppins look like a prostitute meth dealer that runs over nuns as a hobby.

Without such changes, you would have a glut of children in need of adoption and no one who can adopt them all. Even Angelina Jolie's gonna run out of room after a very short while.
