That's funny considering the Left thinks the Republicans are coming apart at the seams, not able to decide on Obamacare at all. Your opinion is dismissed.

Now nice.

Yes, that will be one of the ways it will be spinned. Don't pay attention to this giving away of your body's privacy, folks. It won't really be used, and it's not important.

If that were the case, the bill wouldn't be proposed. Duh.

Big companies will no doubt use this. They will get a bulk price. They will look for anything that will affect their health insurance benefits, like AIDS, HIV, cancer genes, other medical conditions.

Your DNA will then go into a database. Once it's there, it will stay there. The databases will eventually be hacked, or combined, to make for a national database. It can be used for all sorts of things. Are you part Arab? Or Jewish? The govt will no longer have to take your word for your genetic ancestry; now they can just look it up. When they want to round up those with Middle Eastern ancestry and deport them, no problem.

If you carry a gene making you a big risk for a certain kind of cancer, you may find yourself eventually terminated for other reasons, since your gene will impact the company's insurance cost.

Conservatives will be talked into thinking this is necessary and no big deal, the same way they were duped into accepting the Patriot Act. How easily? Time will tell. But they will go along, to get along, and to accept whatever they must in order to get what they expect to be their payola from this administration.

I am part Native American, so round ups are not new to my DNA.

more like a couple hundred. compare that to the high cost of coverage, which is largely laid on employers in our health care system, and my guess is that this could become as common as piss tests, criminal background checks, and consumer history reports that we are all now forced to submit to in order to get most professional jobs. there would also be a strong incentive to share this information with insurance companies. given that the pre-existing conditions protection is about to get a pretty big hole poked in it, it's pretty disturbing, especially for anyone who lets their coverage lapse.

You would have a hard time firing someone for the results of a DNA test and not face huge civil liability.

Thats what they said about drug testing....try getting a job now days without a drug test.

So don't eat the poppy seed dressing.

Re: Oh Goody Folks, it's starting already. Employers Demand Workers' Genetic Test Res

And here I thought conservatives hated government intrusion.....boy, was I wrong.

This bill could put millions of people out of work and on government welfare....so how the hell does that create jobs?

All they're doing is creating unneccessary economic insecurity and more fear....but that is their plan, isn't it?

Ryan is ending welfare.

not really. in my state, they can fire you for any reason or for no reason at all. that's the case in a lot of Republican regions. plus, they'd more likely do it at point of hire. i also had to submit to a complete physical when i got my job.

Ryan is also having all memes referring to him removed from the Internet via microwave signals. ;)

Ah...and I bet we see commodity prices for tin go sky-high. Maybe aluminum foil would work just as good, and surely it has to be more comfortable.

A lot of states are at-will states, but then there are other laws at play especially if you fire someone for cause, union contracts, and so on.

seems it would be difficult to prove, though. they could just decide to eliminate the position, and the employee would have very little recourse.

Sure but if the position exists, eliminating it might not be an option because it is needed to be filled.

then it could be recreated under a different title. see how potentially easy it would be under a "fire at will" regulatory structure? the obvious way to do it would be to not hire the person in the first place, though. it would be pretty hard to prove that the only reason that you didn't get hired was genetic predisposition X.

It would also be pretty expensive to genetic test all your applicants.

not as expensive as health care for a sick pool of employees. insurance companies would probably give employers a pretty sweet deal if they could be reasonably assured that the employer could reduce unhealthy / potentially unhealthy employees by even twenty five percent, not to mention the loss of productivity that sick workers contribute to. there is a big financial incentive to do something like this, and it's worth being concerned about.

Employers who are going to be of the size to afford this are going to be required to provide health insurance anyway, and a great many large employers provide several options for the employees to choose from. If you want to be concerned about it, then be concerned about it. We are all predisposed to something whether we know it or not. I fail to see the utility, especially considering so many of the illnesses that we get are either from communicable diseases or life-style choices.
