NEW YORK -- For more than two years, Lance Crowder was having severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and no local doctor could figure out why. Finally, an emergency room physician in Indianapolis had an idea.

“The first question he asked was if I was taking hot showers to find relief. When he asked me that question, I basically fell into tears because I knew he had an answer,” Crowder said.

The answer was cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS. It’s caused by heavy, long-term use of various forms of marijuana. For unclear reasons, the nausea and vomiting are relieved by hot showers or baths.

CHS can lead to dehydration and kidney failure, but usually resolves within days of stopping drug use. That’s what happened with Crowder, who has been off all forms of marijuana for seven months.

Any medical professionals here want to take a stab at what causes CHS? Have you come across this, or experienced it?

I am not a medical professional, however CHS is simply a toxicity that develops with some chronic heavy users. As more states stupidly legalize weed, we will see more of it.

I am clearly not a medical professional, simply an old observant man, but if THC alters hunger, and causes paranoia,
it is doing some chemical altering to your body.
Prolonged chemical alteration of your body's chemistry, could have unforeseen results!

I wonder. Does it develop from consumption of Alice B Toklas Brownies as well?

All kinds of legal activities can cause illness, or injury which can result in ER visits. This is still no excuse for prohibition.

Freedom means the freedom to make bad choices as well as good one, so I agree.

pot is still less toxic than booze, tobacco, and pretty much every other drug. meanwhile, we should probably be concerned about aspirin abuse.

Aspirin can kill you too if you take too many of them. Recreational use? No. But cannabis has been proven to help with cancer patients, so the whole idea shouldn't just get thrown out with the bath water.

It should at least be a warning flag for chronic heavy users. Pot is not risk free. And it's not the only helth issue in regards to pot. It carries much of the same risks as tobacco and in fact can be worse.

Aspirin abuse is even more toxic. You can bleed to death if you overuse it. However aspirin is not commonly taken recreationally.

I have no real problem with medicinal use of cannabis, if it is legally prescribed. My problem is recreational users who claim medicinal use as a crutch. And I am still against legalization for recreational use.

well, considering that tummy aches are enough to defend failed pot prohibition for some people, i find it hard to believe that these same neoprohibitionists wouldn't want aspirin addressed somehow. i can post more articles which outline how dangerous this drug really is, if you'd like.

And i'm for reinstating prohibition.:lamo:roll::doh Get with times.

Which then would include every pharmaceutical consumed for any length of time.

I agree. But it sure is a good excuse to require warning labels on all marijuana products and educating the public that there are side effects and many of those are not good.

Weed isn't nearly as bad as tobacco. This is well-known.

And even if it was, that's still no reason for the government to ban it. Or throw people in jail for it.

Then don 't wastes your time on aspirin. Address the addictions to pain killers including ibuprofen.

i don't actually advocate kicking in doors and shooting dogs to prevent Advil abuse. i'm pointing out that the war on pot is just as ****ing stupid.

I personally don't believe in prohibition, it wasn't my intention to argue against legal weed. I throw these kinds of stories out there to hopefully educate others and myself about what causes conditions like this.

Re: Little-known Illness tied to Smoking Weed on the Rise

I really don't want this to turn into a debate about whether adults should be allowed to consume a plant or not. Let's keep it to discussing CHS.

No...Aspirin does not get people high . Weed does. That why there is not an aspirin addiction problem, however there is an addiction problem related to weed.
