Any medical professionals here want to take a stab at what causes CHS? Have you come across this, or experienced it?
Thoughts?
Comments?
Well Pot has two pro emetic causing Cannabinoids (CBD and CBG)... in other words they can cause nausea and vomiting. On the other hand.. marijuana also has THC (tetrahydrocannibinol) which is an anti emetic (reduces nausea and vomiting).
So..my theories.
Theory one is that in most people the anti emetic THC wins out over the other two pro emetic causing Cannabinoids except in people that are more sensitized to the pro emetic causing Cannabinoids. Some people may be more susceptible particularly with high doses of cannabinoids .
Theory two is that it might be a function of the different varieties of cannabis that are out there. With medical marijuana, there is a whole host of new varieties of "pot" being grown.. with varying levels of different types of Cannabinoids. Its possible that chronic smokers may be gravitating to cheaper "pot" varieties that have lower THC.. and are higher in the pro emetic cannabinoids. OR availability is switching to these varieties of pot versus the ones that have high THC levels.. (which produce the high)
Theory three is that down regulation is playing a part. as chronic pot smokers use more and more pot.. the body is down regulating or reducing the number of receptors it has for the various cannabinoids in an effort to reach homeostasis. As it does this.. the normal receptors that play a role in gastric motility are messed with and the result is nausea and vomiting.
Personally I would probably gravitate to one or two and that's because this illness seems to be new.. and chronic pot smokers have been around for a while. So if its truly new (and diagnosis is difficult because before patients did not admit chronic marijuana use as much and it mimics other gastro intestinal illnesses).. if its truly new.. then its unlikely to be down regulation since it would have occurred in prior chronic smokers.
So it would seem more likely that it was either due to more people who may be more sensitive to CBD/CBG levels becoming chronic smokers..
Or its due to different strains of pot being grown for higher levels of CBD/CBG.. that tend to have more of the "medicinal effects" (like pain relief and less anxiety) versus the THC which is more psychoactive.
