New Zealand gun crimes rise to highest in a decade despite strict gun bans

The same thing in England. And Australia sees more guns than pre-ban.

That wasn't supposed to happen

Gun crime rates and killings involving guns in New Zealand reached their highest level in a decade this year despite the country's strict gun control measures lauded by left-wing politicians in the United States.

The figures, obtained from police under the Official Information Act by news outlet RNZ, show that gun crime has increased in the country in 2018 and 2019:

Last year, there were 3540 occasions where an offender was found with a gun.

And in both of the last two years, the rate of deadly incidents involving a firearm was the highest it had been since 2009.

The number of guns seized by police is also on the rise, up almost 50 percent on five years earlier at 1263 last year.

An officer was attacked by someone wielding a gun 13 times in 2019, up two on 2018 but remaining steady over the past five years.

New Zealand earned praise from gun control advocates in the spring 2019 after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern banned all "military-style semi-automatic weapons" and "assault rifles" in the wake of a massacre of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch. As a part of the ban, the government implemented a gun buyback program allowing legal gun owners to surrender their firearms to the government for "fair and reasonable compensation." Proponents of the ban assumed that it would result in fewer guns in the country, and thus, fewer gun crimes. But that evidently is not what has happened so far.

Criminals don't obey laws.

That's why they are called "criminals."

Gun control advocates seem to ignore this fact...the most important thing appears to be "reducing the potential" by disarming law-abiding citizens.

Criminals always seem to still get guns. :coffeepap:

And that is the fatal flaw of the oft mentioned "bans".

More evidence, if ever it was needed, that the private ownership of guns needs to be banned.

Gun crime is bad....so how can the answer be to supply even more guns causing even more gun crime ?

And put it in perspective. NZ gun crime is still NOTHING like we see in the USA.

Where's your evidence of that ?

Gun crime is still very rare in the UK, even though crime is mot.

Hmmm...I suppose that all depends on what one means by "very" rare.

Gun crime highest for a decade for four police forces...The ONS analysis for individual police forces covers the year to the end of March 2018 and showed 6,521 firearms offences, a 2% rise and the fourth increase in a row.

The reason such "crimes" seem relatively lower per capita is the way that country does it's crime statistics. They have all sorts of methods to "waffle" things to make it seem everything is doing all right there.

Meanwhile, we all recall how knife crimes have soared in the UK, especially London.

Ten charts on the rise of knife crime in England and Wales...There were 43,516 knife crime offences in the 12 months ending March 2019

Yes, the figure quoted for NZ's gun crime was what, 3,540 ?

That was for the whole country - that's the total for any small city in the USA

They seem to have quite the array of SKSs, AKs, and what seem too be ARs. Only what fits the"assault weapon" theme.

"And put it in perspective". N.Z. population not quite 5,000,000 with 1.5 million firearms. Yeah we see a little more. All in the perspective.

Are we saying that other countries have much less gun crime than us but they've seen an uptick?

And yet another deflection.

We don't have draconian gun control laws in the USA.

New Zealand does...and yet they still have 3,540 firearms crimes in a nation with a population of a mid-sized State in the USA.

Meanwhile, a tiny fraction of our population do use guns to commit crimes. But tens of, and perhaps even hundreds of millions of American's own firearms and do no harm.

Ignored are reports of local news where armed store owners and common citizens act to successfully prevent such crimes. I've posted examples in the past, and other members have done so as well.

I prefer to stand by the ideal that I have the right to defend myself from criminals, foreign invaders, aggressors of other kinds, and even my own government if necessary.

IMO there is a good reason the right to keep and bear arms is the Second Amendment, since it was designed to protect all the rights listed in the First Amendment and every other Right one considers needing such protection.

If YOU don't want to keep and bear arms, no one is making you. Telling ME I can't just because YOU fear the possibilities? Not happening while I live anyway.

Oregon's population is just under the entirety of NZs. WA. state is about 2,000,000 more than NZ. There's that pesky perception again.

What we are saying is the three countries who have banned firearms have more crime and/or guns than before.

It is rather clear.

Yet we have higher crime

And what's the annual gun crime figure for say Portland ?

If a ban didn't work in those three countries why does anyone in their right mind think it will work here?

What I am saying is lax gun laws leads to more crime than they have

NZ Ban = MORE NZ gun crime and guns

UK Ban = MORE UK gun crime and guns

Aussie Ban = MORE Aussie gun crime and guns

Maybe a ban isn't the right course to take.

US = lax gun laws

Most crime in the developed world

America has lax gun laws and higher crime than all 3.
