Every single Jersey City public school is on lockdown in response to the active shooter situation in the city.

The NRA wants us to believe this is freedom.

Shannon Watts

I have to say. That is a far cry from being free.

Again, our gun obsession gives one pause. It is high time for us to enact some effective gun control.

Another in an interminable line of emotional appeals seeking to stampede people into acting against their own interests. :doh

NO...we do not need any more attempts at "effective gun control." IMO people need to stop demanding more laws restricting individual rights based on fear-mongering, and start practicing a little more PERSONAL self-defense.

Maybe it's just freedom with unpleasant price. Here that price is "you can't carry guns", guess what, I take it without second thought.

1. A country is only as good as its people.

2. Restricting gun ownership will not stop these crazy killing sprees.

a. England has strict gun laws, so the growing number of bad actors have simply turned to knives.

3. Guns will always get across our southern border, for as we all know that "border" is a joke. Thus bad actors will always have access to guns.

4. The gun violence cannot be stopped, for the problem is not the guns, but the lack of character among so many Americans.

NJ has one of the most idiotic anti gun set of laws in the USA. I guess the gun banners think one more gun law would stop these sorts of incidents.

except you can never come up with "effective gun control" when it comes to stopping premeditated felonious activity.

and of course, you really aren't motivated by that-your definition of "effective gun control" is not something that stops deliberate criminal actions, but rather effectively harasses legal gun owners and gun ownership

LOL

Jersey has some of the most god awful restrictive gun laws in the country.

Maybe people will wake up and realize we have a serious mental illness issue in this country.................how bout dat?

I guess the police officer who was shot needs to practice more self-defense.

I could not possibly agree more! When fear-mongering and bulls---- claims to further an agenda are more important to a society than admitting the failures of a monopoly education system then freedom is in question! It is a real problem when scaring people for something less likely to happen than winning the lottery is paramount in a system where you can go to jail for not letting your kids be indoctrinated for a minimum of 12 years

Effective gun control could at least force the criminals to find the methods they do elsewhere to keep violent crime and death to the same or higher levels than us!

Good call.
Uh, teenagers too? If you get to carry a handgun for protection, then that 15-year-old girl should too. She's far more vulnerable in a dangerous world than you are.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for every American being able to carry whatever weapon he or she favours but if you cite personal protection you have to extend the right to the weakest, most vulnerable members of society. Any other position is just cowardly.

It's not about stopping these sorts of incidence. It's about you. They will use these incidents as an excuse to try and deny you rights.

that certainly is the truth

And that is all it is. The libs don’t care about stopping violence. They only care about disarming their political opponents.

Maybe after 100 years or so, everything is same except everyone is just numb. Having shootings long enough, it's coming more and more normal. Just another normal day, who cares?

Well, I have one idea. How about app to alarm where's shooting going on so you can avoid those places where bullets are flying everywhere. Another is max out guns/ammunition for everyone and training (could be governments program so guns and training are funded by taxation). Imagine absolutely everyone carrying gun(s) everywhere (as many as they can take). Is that the Right Path?

"The NRA wants us to believe this is freedom." <--- What exactly does that mean?

Multiple killed in New Jersey shooting, including an officer – WAVY.com

The report from my local news outlet to me this is the most telling part showing WTF is wrong in Society
Dozens of bystanders pressed against the police barrier to film the action on cellphones, some whooping when gunfire bursts filled the air.

What's wrong with people when their instincts are to film and cheer for such actions. You're giving the gunmen the attention they crave and encouraging future incidents. Until this kind of mentality changes no amount of gun control will be effective.

Right to carry gun is feature of freedom in America?

And the OP has a problem with that? (The point is what exactly does it mean in the context of putting schools on lockdown?)

Not sure, but if freedom is tied to unpleasant outcomes, you can still take freedom as a coin and point out what's on other side of it. Those positive things like Good guy with a gun. Killing bad people fast enough is also one narrative and another is where you try to think outside of the box. But then you need to change some ground rules too to make it support any restrictions (as another way to deal with this problem). With current settings, I can't really see any change coming.

Options are just mental: do not care -> numb -> apathy ..

It does sound like the OP is blaming this on guns. That's why I asked. Guns aren't responsible for this. Crazy people are.

I live in country without US style gun rights and it's ok. But it's because of different mind set (=how we formed our rules). I put it that way: we don't feel like our freedom is restricted because we can't carry guns. It's just one particular thing (lack of guns in general) and we can live like that. Life isn't any worse.

For example: here all children are going to school by walking / biking or with public transportation and it's perfectly fine and safe. Without adult's looking after them. Nothing happens. It's not *ell hole situation, when it's gun-free environment. Lack of guns don't harm us. That's the "weird" way to look at, but it's possible as we have different ground rules here (constitutional difference).

I understand the different mindsets. Kids are very safe here in most areas. Could be because we are allowed to own guns. The more restrictions and banning, the more criminals win. That's just the reality here.

I don't know what you think the government can do taking my guns away from me isn't going to stop the next mass murder they will get their guns some other way.

From what I read, only 1 school, nearby Sacred Heart, had detained the students, and the shooting was a police ambush. 3 dead including 1 LEO. Several more wounded.

Nothing to do with any school.

So come up with some effective gun control. Who knows, even I might be in.

Obviously New Jersey hasn't.
