Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, barely able to maintain composure, criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican lawmakers for not reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and taking action against gun violence, asking them in emotional remarks to choose between the nation's foremost gun lobby and "the children that are getting gunned down in this country every single day."

Acevedo made his remarks to reporters Monday as the Houston Police Department prepared to escort the body of Sgt. Chris Brewster, an officer who died in the line of duty, to a funeral home. The 32-year-old was shot and killed while responding to a call with a team on Saturday.

"I don't want to hear about how much they support law enforcement," Acevedo said. "I don't want to hear about how much they care about lives and the sanctity of lives yet, we all know in law enforcement that one of the biggest reasons that the Senate and Mitch McConnell and (Texas Sens.) John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and others are not getting into a room and having a conference committee with the House and getting the Violence Against Women's Act (passed) is because the NRA doesn't like the fact that we want to take firearms out of the hands of boyfriends that abuse their girlfriends. And who killed our sergeant? A boyfriend abusing his girlfriend. So you're either here for women and children and our daughters and our sisters and our aunts, or you're here for the (National Rifle Association).

So I don't want to see their little smug faces talking about how much they care about law enforcement when I'm burying a sergeant because they don't want to piss off the NRA. Make up your minds, whose side are you on? Gun manufacturers, the gun lobby, or the children that are getting gunned down in this country every single day."

The Republican Party- selling their souls by putting the interests of folks the NRA, big pharma, Wall Street bankers, corporate America, and Vladimir Putin just to hang on to power and profits for one more day. And they are enabled by their propaganda arm Fox News which brainwashes and whips up into a frenzy such large segments of our uneducated population. It's hard to know whether to call this a farce or a tragedy.

What were they proposing to stop criminals from using guns? Did I miss something?

They were proposing to stop domestic abusers from having guns. Too many of those guns are being used on women and children. The NRA is concerned it might hurt sales.

No, IMO they are putting the interests of individual rights above those who argue blanket restrictions and controls based on emotional appeals.

The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; what part of that do you fail to understand?

I've never believed in such "Identity laws" as this "violence against women act." Aren't women the equal of men in all things? Isn't that our current understanding of social justice?

If so, why aren't basic laws against assault, battery, and other violent crimes sufficient to handle abusive actions of BOTH males AND females?

In any case, I do not support restricting the right to keep and bear arms for any reasons other than conviction of a violent crime with weapons, or court-determined mental illness deficiency.

How does the Defense of Women Act tie into a cop getting shot? If the act had gotten reauthorized would the weapon mysteriously disappear from the violators possession?

The guy violated the law by having a gun and killing a cop in Texas is usually a death sentence. So what exactly did this bureaucrat want the GOP to do? make it MORE illegal to shoot a cop? the fact is, NRA developed training saves far more police lives than leftwing gun control schemes

Did they define what domestic abuse is? Did they say a conviction was needed first?

Killing people with a car is also illegal. Does that mean we should get rid of all drunk driving laws, speed limits, and traffic lights?

How much more American blood do you want to see shed to spare you a little minor inconvenience next time when buying your 350th military style weapon?

This must be fake news because New Jersey has among the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Even having an unloaded 1700s flintlock musket is a felony in New Jersey. Therefore, this is an impossible story.

you seem unable to distinguish between laws that restrict how you use an item versus ownership. no one is against laws that restrict you using firearms in reckless or harmful ways. The proper analogy is that you want to ban cars or booze

stupid dichotomy: you pretend inconveniencing honest people will help reduce violent crime. Even the most gullible gun control advocate doesn't really believe that-but it is what has to be said to conceal the fact that your real goal is more and more inconveniencing honest gun owners.

I am inconvenienced by being forced to stop at red lights. Should I advocate getting rid of all of them?

again, why are you unable to understand that I don't oppose laws that restrict how someone USES a firearm or a car

So in the same way, if we get rid of all red lights we can just have laws for how someone uses their car. Arrest them only once they run pedestrians over or something, right? Why inconvenience otherwise law abiding American citizens?

I’ll tell you why. Because communist liberals hate the freedoms Americans have!

But..........geeeees!

Do you really need that 350th gun? :lamo

Stopping domestic abusers from owning guns would be a state issue.

Why hasn't his state forbidden it?

When you have finished peeing yourself and making your ridiculous histrionic comments, would you like to actually have an intelligent conversation about how to prevent gun crimes?

The Houston Chief of Police has a long history of making political attacks and this is just his latest. He is using the blood of one of his men to further a political argument...one which would have had no impact in this case. Arturo Solis was not legally allowed to own a gun, did not purchase firearms legally, and his family denied he even had firearms. So how would the passage of VAWA have prevented this tragic event? And if the rats and people like you are so up in arms about the re-certification of the previously passed legislation, why arent you pissed at the rats that played their usual stupid political games and stuffed new language in there that prevented it from being signed off yet again?

Yep.

The good news though is people are waking up. Getting rid if guns will be the new war on drugs. I can't wait.

You can't wait for a bunch of laws passed that effect POC more than white people, do little to nothing to address the issue, and benefit organized crime operations?

No, drunk driving laws, speed limits, and traffic lights are good. We've also got laws that say you can only discharge firearms in designated areas such as shooting ranges, at such ranges you can't shoot during a "cease fire" just like you can't run red lights, and often you can't carry guns in places that serve alcohol.

We've already got laws that say you can't discharge firearms in places where there's people just like we've got a law that says you can't run red lights, your point?

And the war on drugs has been a losing battle.
