Reported Shooting of Sheriff’s Deputy in Lancaster Was Hoax: LASD

The reported shooting of a sheriff's deputy in Lancaster this week in what authorities previously described as a "targeted attack" that triggered a massive manhunt was a hoax, sheriff's officials said Saturday night.

Authorities first described Wednesday's 2:45 p.m. incident outside the the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lancaster station as a shooting, then said the following day that the involved weapon may have been a pellet gun, rather than a firearm.

But sheriff's officials announced late Saturday that Deputy Angel Reinosa, a rookie deputy with the department, made the whole thing up.

Rookie trying to drum up sympathy perhaps.

KFI640 interviewed the man in charge of the Lancaster station. The reporter asked why the department declared there was no cause for concern in the area when supposedly there was a sniper on the loose. You could tell the department had at that point determined the shooting to be a hoax.

Yeah, you could nearly smell the embarrassment over this one. The entire police station turned out to search that apartment, as it was right across the street. No one apparently heard a gunshot.

I guess I had hope it was just that it was the pellet gun, and that the recruit had overstated his damage, but that would still leave a shooter running around, so we knew something was up.

I guess it good that we filter out guys like this early in their career, but I truly wonder what his endgame was. I guess a pension as a disabled cop in his 20s?
