It is called the m-24, still issued to this day in the us army as a sniper rifle, russia and china also still issue bolt actions and police and military in europe still often use the awm rifle due to range, just the mere ad hominems you use as well as spouting a definition but refusing to back it up by claiming everyone knows it(btw that is a logical fallacy to google it) shows you lost the debate a long time ago and are not worthy to debate with anyone with any decency honesty or facts.

Charles Whitman and the Texas Tower shooting.

Gun banners constantly bray about banning weapons of war.

well guess what-The K98, the SMLE and the Springfield 03 were all weapons of war. So was the Colt 1911 and the MI Carbine (which our own government sold hundreds of thousands of these to US civilians). The AR 15 and the semi auto versions of things like the AKM never were.

I lived in Austin in 1966. Whitman's wife had been a teacher at my school. Whitman killed a police officer who was the uncle of one of my best friends. You cannot stop people like that apart from putting them in cages to keep them from going crazy and doing crazy stuff, threatening the general public. But we cannot lock up all potential murderers before they commit a crime, and background checks don't really help either, judging by the Boston bombers' case and the Sanford school shooter. Americans need to use common sense in dealing with dangers but not go crazy advocating remedies which will do little more that strip all Americans of their Constitutional rights and freedoms.
 
The truth is you are not going to make much change even if you ban those "weapons of war". The cities in America with the strictest gun laws have most of the worst gun crimes. You will never get all the guns off the street and without that it's pretty hopeless to stop some crazy from going out and committing one of these crazy crimes. Arm the folks at the vulnerable places, like schools and you will see it go down. Most of these people look for soft targets.

If you try to eliminate gun crime by banning a certain type or types of firearm, you will fail
Half measures are not the answer

The answer is to ban all gun and for that to happen, you need to repeal the 2nd amendment first.

As I read that title in my subscribed threads page, it occurred to me. The gun zealots do not care about the slaughter of our children.

Remember, these are the same people who hurled accusations that Sandy Hook was False Flag, that Obama used an onion to cry and came out defending their Precious guns before the bodies were even cold.

Mass shootings could be one an hour and gun owners still wouldn't acknowledge a problem exists.

it occurs to me that anti gun extremists-and those who play such activists on message boards, actually look forward to massacres in order to use such tragedies to advance their agenda. They claim we gun owners don't care about the victims-which is a lie, but we note they seem to hope for victims, which is clearly the truth

What difference would it make if law abiding citizens gave up their firearms, none, since those doing the shooting are for the vast majority criminals. You seem to think others should give up their rights so that you can have a false sense if security, the idea is ludicrous. As for AR bans, already did that changed nothing, hence why it was repealed. Another ban would not be complied with because people tend to ignore stupid laws

I don't see it as a punishment

More like requiring a motorist to drive at or below a certain speed limit, even though his/her driving record has never injured or put in danger anyone.

It would be the start of removing guns from American society...millions more guns will follow them to the furnace

A ban on one type or even a few types of gun is a worthless half measure

People won't tend to ignore a "stupid" law that sees them in jail for violating it.
