Gun talk thread for gun enthusiasts

lol...the SKS isn't even banned in Canada. One might suggest you have your sights set too high...if you'll excuse the pun. :)

It should be....when there's a mass shooting by one, it will be.

Ban all semi-auto guns.

First Blood - an awesome Sylvester Stallone movie from 1982.

Masturbation - self gratification.

when you go on and on about what you think should happen, and you go on and on that it cannot happen-that is the epitome of M2.

One of my favorite all around fun guns, and a decent home defense firearm-is the beretta storm carbines-they use beretta 92 or 96 (Forty cal) pistol mags. I understand they are legal and popular in California. I have a couple in 9mm and one in forty. easy to shoot

I'll start with a question:

Any of you own or have shot a .300 Blackout - either in AR15 platform or otherwise? I'm seriously thinking about getting a complete .300 upper barrel assembly and magazines for my AR15 I'm building up rather seriously in terms of quality and cost.

The .300 Blackout basically in the intermediary between the .223 and the .308. Basically it is a .308 short. Shorter cartridge, lower velocity but bigger and heavier bullet. Faster isn't always better for a bullet. Good enough is good enough and from videos I've seen it is a devastating round into gel - designed to release all its energy on impact - but also eliminating penetrating thru walls, your neighbor's house etc - and significantly less recoil and volume of the report (not as low) than a .308 NATO.

It would take all of 2 minutes to switch between .223 and .300 blackout, provided each has its own zeroed in sights. An easy cheap upgrade of mine has extended stainless steel pins to remove and replace the upper assembly.

Anyone of you ever shot a .300 Blackout? Is the .223 so good it offers no meaningful benefit? Thoughts?

Never owned one but have shot someone elses, the 300 blackout is ok in my opinion, but the area it really shines is in low power loads and subsonic loads. .300 holds much better energy subsonic than 5.56 and also handles weaker loads much better as well, so if you are smeone who wants more load flexibility, or want a quieter round .300 blackout is good, but I prefer 5.56.

almost all of us who really know shotguns suggest a semi auto. the best available include the various Benellis, the FnH SLP-1, the Remington Versamax and the Beretta defensive shotgun-cannot recall its name right now (I own the first three-not the Beretta)

I dissagree my remington 870 when I still owned it has ended more problems without ever firing a shot. Just the mere moving of the action does the trick, first time I used it some out of town teens came to my quiet little town and tried to steal my truck, I got woke up because that 84 dodge was a rusty ragged bastard with a distinct sound to the hinges and a non locking drivers door. I came out and just the mere sound of that pump action loading a round caused them to scatter like cockroaches.

There is a reason a pump action shotgun has the most recognized sound on earth.

Hrrmm...no love for the SKS so far?

I'm planning on getting back into shooting, now that I'm back in the country, and I'm leaning towards that. I know a lot of people that swear by them, saying that they're great all around guns for most of what you'd want to do. I've fired them at the range, and they are a very nice gun.

Would get an AR for the range too, but haven't decided if I'm getting my restricted license yet or not.

I would love an sks but with bans on most imports of military weapons it is near impossible to get them without shelling out a bunch of money even if you find a seller. The sks in my opinion is inferior to the mosin for hunting and long range, however the sks was known as one of the most reliable guns ever made, plus their 7.62 ammo is fairly cheap unlike 7.62x54 which is getting expensive and 5.45x39 which is getting really expensive.

Of recently the cheapest I have found an sks is around 600 bucks for a beatup abused and in extremely poor shape chinese model, and the chinese model was already vastly inferior to the russian models. 10-15 years ago the sks was actually cheap, wish I bought one when you could get them for 100-300 bucks a piece for a decent one.

Ok, Rich... America is going to adopt a stricter gun control policy than CANADA... :lamo

Nice troll, bud, I did laugh out loud...

I have heard that claim and don't deny it, but I also will continue to state that most of us who teach shotgun tactics, suggest semi autos.

To contribute to non gun control talk, I may possibly maybe mock gun control logic anyways.

I just recently made a mod to my taurus pt92 which was black with black plastic grips, people consider black scary guns too powerful, so I just put bright shiny wood grips on it, by gun control logic I must have cut it's rate of fire in half.

Well I actually dislike auto shotguns with a passion, I sold my turkish made pos hatfield shotgun with was auto because I hated it, only auto shotgun I own now is a 105 year old winchester model 1911 shotgun nicknamed the widowmaker.
\

I also last week bought a mossberg 500 dirt cheap at the pawn shop, early 80's model fixed choke, love that pump action to death, almost fills the dove hunting void left behind when I traded my 870 to a friend because he needed a dove hunting shotgun.

the laminated soviet ones used to be had for 200 bucks. I never bought one since I had some really nice Russian AK jobs. 545x39

I have used or own

Berettas-competition Autos-391s-utterly reliable-
Mossberg Miculek competition gun-not cheap around 650 (which is low for a competition gun)-shot a 95/100 in winning a clays tournament with it
FNH SLP i-best defensive shotgun I have ever used-not cheap 1100
Several Benellis-they kick hard due to being recoil operated but never fail
My son runs a versamax in 3G-soft shooting, very reliable
My wife has an 1187 tactical gun-soft shooting but it needs better maintenance than the above guns

This is gonna break your heart, then...hehe...

Russian SKS - 7.62x39, 20", Surplus

Access Denied <-- Notice, that's cabelas.CA Also notice, you only need a PAL to purchase it, you don't even need the restricted license. It is a five round magazine, though...hehe... I mean, it is Canada. ;)

This will likely be the first rifle I buy when I get my PAL. Not sure if I'm into actually hunting as much as just going to the range...this is a great range gun, and I wouldn't really feel comfortable taking a shot at a deer at anything further than 150 yards with my current level of expertise, so...yeah, I'm thinking this is the one.

Now though a russian one may go for 900 in poor condition and 1200-1500 for a halfway decent one, the supply still exists however it can not legally reach america, meaning we have to obtain existing supply with increasing demand.

The mosin is the same way, I got mine for 300 bucks because my friend needed the money to get his truck out of repo, however even at that time 300 was on the lower end, many now go for 600-1500 bucks which is sad because ten to fifteen years ago 79-109 were the common prices for them, imports halted except a few from countries doing the runaround. They are not in short supply russia has millions of them, however that means nothing if they are blocked for import.

Damn you canadians and your non obama laws aimed at protecting gun manufacturors from competition from cheaper war surplus.

:lamo I'm sorry!

I wish you canadians could help us but I am betting the hoops needed to run through to import milsurp from canada would probably cost more than any savings. It is a shame because the price you guys get is on par to what we were paying pre import bans plus inflation.
