Here's what I see:

1. Bernie or Warren win the White House
2. The democrats control both the house and the senate
3. Another big mass shooting

Sort of a perfect storm of gun control.

And this was in the news:

Beto O’Rourke Says He’s ‘Open’ To ‘Mandatory’ Gun Buybacks.

O’Rourke, a former Texas representative, went on liberal podcast “Pod Save America,” where he was asked if he would be open to “gun licenses and mandatory buyback programs like they did in Australia” if elected president.

“Yes, and I’m open to them right now as a candidate. It absolutely has to be part of the conversation. And at the end of the day, if it’s going to save lives, if it’s going to prevent the kinds of tragedies that we saw in El Paso, [Texas;] Gilroy, [California;] and Dayton, [Ohio,] or this weekend in Chicago or all over this country on a daily basis, then let’s move forward and do it,”

Yes, I can easily see the Dems trying to violate the 2nd A, including the nonesence the Aussie Government imposed on their people. The problem is, mandatory or not, most American gun owners will not comply, then what, house to house searches?

The major problem with a mandatory "buy back" program (of anything) is that it assumes the government has a right to decide what items you now own may be legally kept and what (if anything) they are worth. Even if the program was a "swap back" (of anything) the government is still in the position of mandating that, for example, a customized 1967 Nova "hot rod" is functionally (equally?) replaceable by an electric golf cart.

How is it possible to give the government the power to take your $600 to $1500 firearm and "reimburse" you $100 and say that does not violate due process of law or the 2A? Even under eminent domain powers the compensation for property taken for public use must be its fair market value.

Probably, if they catch you with a gun, you go to jail. I don't see them doing house to house searches.

But if you can never go out and shoot your guns, that will remove the appeal of gun ownership for many.

I live in a rural area and can shoot as much as I want. As for those that don't share that luxury I am sure many would not comply then vote out the idiots that are violating their rights. Two quickest ways to lose political power are to mess with SS or nullify the 2nd A.

Beto seems to be a bit clueless as to how that whole Constitution thing works....

Oh, and just some food for thought, what if a State refuses to comply, then what?

Yeah, I really dont see that ending well for any party attempting to undermine the 2A.

I'm not sure that the imagery of armed squadrons of police and ATF going house to house to ensure civilian compliance with a government nullification of the Constitution would play all that well outside of CNN and MSNBC

Eric Swalwell had an answer for that a while back. He'd just nuke them.

Gun sanctuary cities, lol.

Sure, much like how 911 made it so we cant bring a bottle of water on a plane, we are only a epidemic of violence away from attempts at a police state. Politicians are happy to take advantage of a crisis to win votes (Dems are running on banning guns). The media is complicit in fear mongering for ratings. The people are sheep.

The real issue is will the court let them get away with it, and what would the politicians do in response to losing court cases? We are damn lucky the states demanded the bill of rights. Without the 2nd amendment, this issue would be already settled.

States have refused to do things in the past. They wound up complying.

You are talking the Bill of Rights here, don't count on compliance being acceptable. Hopefully we will not see that day but if it comes down to it it could lead to the desolution if the USA.

Isnt that the Cali dork that posted a poll for gun buy back and 79% said "no"?

It is far more than a 2A issue if the government gives itself the power to take private property simply to prevent folks from owning it. The ban on 2 cycle (stroke?) powered motorcycles did not include taking them, making owning them a crime or buying them back - it simply stopped future sales of them (like the past AWB law).

We the sheeple must pay very close attention to the federal government deciding that it has the Constitutional power to take any legally purchased private property away from us. Today it may be "just" scary black rifles but tomorrow it could well be anything which emits "too much" CO2, causes second hand smoke or winds up in landfalls or the ocean.

Eventually it will happen. I couldn't give a time frame, but it's essentially guaranteed to happen.

Pretty sure the Supreme Court will strike down any gun laws for the next 30 years

It is suspected that California is using it's new "ammo background check" (which is currently being challenged), as a way to interpolate what guns you own. Every legislative session passes some law or another designed to make a percentage of gun owners felons by possession.

When your goal is to control your population you find all kinds of reasons to collect information on them. Just keep this in mind, in California that kind of thing isn't a "police state" tactic. It's merely "protecting the public".

I don't see Dems passing any "serious" gun control laws given the chance, but I do see them passing a lot of silly, stupid and downright illegal ones.

No it won't. What would happen if America passed laws to create a "well regulated" militia? Only people who belong to this militia could own guns. To belong to this this militia you have to be able to run a mile in under 10 minutes, soldiers have to be fit.

How do you think the Supreme Court would rule on that?

I think we gun owners should get some common sense gun regulation passed before we have to face something like a ban.
