A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in south Kansas City and died from his injuries Friday afternoon, police said in a news release.

Police said they were called to a home in the 11300 block of Calico Drive after 12:30 p.m. in regard to the shooting.

While responding to the call, police learned the child had a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital by his mother.

And yet another example proves that there are far too many guns.

If the toddler had died from ingesting rat poison (or drain cleaner) would you assert that there is far too much rat poison (or drain cleaner)? If the toddler had died from drowning in a swimming pool would you assert that there are far too many swimming pools?

Steps have been taken to correct child poisonings--i.e. mandatory childproof caps--and drownings: mandatory fencing around pools.

Are you saying you favor similar mandatory guns laws?

I was unable to load your OP link but assume that criminal charges are likley to result from this tragic and (likely) easily avoidable death. What "similar mandatory gun laws" are you avocating (if any) and why were none mentioned in the OP or in the above reply? You started this (moronic?) thread stating that "there are far too many guns" not that they should be handled, packaged or secured differently.

There are far too many guns, especially since there are no laws requiring manufacturers and owners to include safety precautions like there are with poisons and swimming pools.

Didn't the gun zealots once block the movement for mandatory childproof triggers?

Do I need to look that up for you?

Child Proof Spray Bottle Requires Double Trigger Action

we can make a spray bottle safe, but gun zealots apparently cannot be bothered with pulling the triggers on Precious twice.

The NRA's Next Battleground ... Smart Guns

Gun control: the NRA wants to take America's smart guns away

And yet despite all "safety measures" we still have such drownings and poisonings anyway.

There are gun locks and gun safes, and many people use them. However, these should not be mandatory because not all gun owners have "children." Meanwhile, it appears from the few sensationalizing anti-gun news reports of such incidents, even those who do have children rarely seem to have this problem.

Now if a gun owner wants to buy such safety measures? Good and well.

IMO Nanny-state laws are the antithesis of liberty. :coffeepap:

Now we seem to be getting somewhere. I assume you want a requirement that guns be sold with a trigger (or slide?) lock and that a law should be passed to require gun owners to add them to any existing guns which they own. My pistol (Taurus PT638) has a key operated slide lock but no seperate (redundant?) trigger lock - would that suffice as making it potentially "child proof"?

Mandatory, thoroughly tested, childproof trigger locks would be a good first step.

Federally mandating the possession (and use?) of only one of many possible means of restricting unauthorized access to a gun is not a good first step - it is government run amok and becoming more of a nanny state. BTW, what, exactly, is such mandate the "first step" to?

If one has multiple guns is it not acceptable to securely store them (e.g. lock them up together in a safe) by other means or do you own stock in a trigger lock corporation?

Meanwhile three year old kids shoot themselves. While Rome burns....

And drownings still outnumber accidental gun deaths among children.

And we've got those, and there are still about three times as many children that drown in swimming pools as there are that are shot.

Semi automatic handguns now days have both thumb safeties and grip safeties, and sometimes trigger safeties too, what more do you want?

Meanwhile three year olds drown in swimming pools and die from poisons, while Rome burns. Your point?

How does an example prove there are too many anythings?

It's not the first toddler shot, nor will it be the last. Does that clarify it for ya?
