A 6-year-old Georgia girl died this week after her 4-year-old brother accidentally shot her in the head in a car outside their home, authorities said.

The girl, identified as Millie Drew Kelly on a GoFundMe site set up for the family, was shot Monday evening at their subdivision about a 40-minute drive northwest of downtown Atlanta...

...when the vehicle failed to start. The mother exited to try to find out what was wrong with the car, authorities said.

The boy took a gun from the car's console and accidentally fired it while his mother was outside, striking his sister in the head, the sheriff's office said.

People are often just too cavalier with their weapons.

Not nessisarily. The NRA will probably write an editorial reminding us If we had armed the good guy six year old and given him some shooting lessons so that he could defend himself against the 4 year old thug instead of waiting for the cops to come......

Sad story. A personal trajedy in many ways for that particular family.

I expect that the State will hold the parent(s) properly responsible for failing to secure the weapon.

Meanwhile, millions of other lawful gun owners whose children did not have access and thus did not end up shooting one another can continue exercising their right to keep and bear arms.

Is four years too young for a gun safety lesson? A demonstration of a shot (wearing ear protection), then explain why don't touch it and to get an adult immediately if a gun is seen.

Perhaps that couldn't save a four year old. I think a single gun safety lesson (without
even touching a weapon) could save many children, and it should be mandatory early in elementary school.

So what exact law would have stopped this? What punishment would cause someone to be more careful-a punishment that is more drastic than losing a child. People do stupid stuff. This was a case of the mother not thinking. And trying to make anti gun points with this is really pretty pathetic

Does a mandatory gun safety lesson, provision of certification or go on the school field trip, for elementary school students constitute gun control? I'm not sure everyone is comfortable with a shift in paradigm.

I have no problem with a school teaching gun safety. Makes sense to me. If we teach kids how to put rubbers on a cucumber we ought to teach them about gun safety.

Many of us do-but I don't have small children in my car. When my son was young-before he learned about gun safety, I didn't. Or if he had friends in the car, I didn't. He's 21 and he's the youngest person who might be in my car

We're talking mandatory certification of 6 year olds, and perhaps an additional class at later years. High handed government compulsory education. For everyone in public school. This is big gubmint intruding on private lives for the greater good.
