"gun violence" is a misnomer

Yes, to throw small pieces of metal at high speeds.

And the small pieces of metal then tear through the flesh of their target terminating them.

There, I finished your story for you.

As do I, yet when seconds really matter the police are only minutes away. Having a gun and not needing it is far better than needing a gun and not having it.

I'm just glad I've never needed one. I hope I never do, why? Because the thought of killing anyone, even an attacker bothers me.

well as Clint once said

=Phys251;1069787291]Then would you care to explain why some people spend thousands more on AR-15s
Would you be surprised to know that you can buy an AR-15 model for under$500.00? Yes some people do spend large amounts with all the bells and whistles.
and the like when a much simpler .45 would do?
OK so you feel like going out and getting some of that "tasty venison".That is why we have the 2nd Amendment after all. NOT. A .45 handgun isn't the best for it.
Note the precise wording of my question. I am not asking why someone would buy a .45. I am asking why someone would instead buy a gun that is much more expensive and has projectiles that have much higher kinetic energy.
It's that "precise wording" that leads me to think that you don't know straight up about either and shouldn't give opinions on things concerning firearms. Like politicians making gun laws when they know not what they speak of.

well it depends on bullet design too/ A big slow 45 bullet tends to dump all the energy in body. Almost all active shooters who have chosen AR 15s get the easy to obtain FMJ. FMJ tends to punch right through a torso and not dump all the energy into the target
TD I know what you mean along with others but 10 will get 20 that that was a waste of words on Phys.

You imply that you understand the concept of kinetic energy more than I do. Fascinating.
Your the one talking about flying shells. What does that have to do with kinetic energy. I guess unless it hit you in the eye.
However several pages back you don't seem to know a lot or least ways concerning it with firearms.

It allows the reduction of freedom for the law abiding to be called (mislabeled as?) thing control. Many forms of crime could be reduced by limiting the freedom of all and essentially establishing a police state. A lot of crime is committed by (street?) gang members (gang crime?), yet membership in a street gang is not illegal.

Remove all the alcohol from the country and all means of making it, and drunk driving won't be a problem.

Remove all mind altering drugs from the country and all means of growing/making them and chemical abuse becomes a distant memory.

Remove all the motorized vehicles from the highway and require people to walk, run, or find some other way to get around and voila! No more traffic accidents and many millions of injuries will be avoided and millions of lives will be saved. (Eliminate the airplanes too and according to AOC and we save the planet as well, but that's another topic.)

Gather up and ban every substance known to be caustic or poisonous in some way and no more poisonings or injuries from such substances.

And of course make it a capital offense--no exceptions--for using physical or verbal violence of any sort toward any person. It wouldn't be long before we would eliminate everybody committing such offenses.

Of course we soon have a world none of us would want to live in and most of us would probably starve to death, but oh well. The ways it would make things better would justify the down side yes?

It is the same thing when it comes to ending so-called 'gun violence.' Many of us are old enough to remember an America in which in many places pretty much every household had some sort of firearm and a lot of kids had their own. And yet nobody was getting shot or injured and nobody feared 'gun violence' because the society was civil and non violent, both verbally and physically.

Shouldn't that be what we shoot for?

This recording must have been made in his pre chair-arguing days :)

Yeah, it was magnum force. I was in HS when that came out. I am sixty now

I'm 2 years younger and I remember watching Dirty Harry which came out in 1971 - I believe I was in 5th grade.

Magnum force with David Soul as one of the main bad guys was a couple years later IIRC. I remember I was probably around 14 because you couldn't get into see an R film without a parent then. Fortunately my dad liked Dirty Harry too

But over and over and over and Russian collusion and everything else you can think of non stop?

I don't do either of those things, left or right. I just watch and laugh.

Is fencing designed to prepare Olympic fencers to stab people to death? are Javelin and discus throwers in track preparing to kill people with such weapons?
Holy jumping Jehoshaphat never thought about that. They had us practice that stuff in high school(will not the fencing). But I shall be on alert next time I drive by the sports field.

The difference is Obama was never investigated for being a Muslim. Remember that. It was a stupid lie to begin with and though it played well in certain circles there was no merit to the claim, no evidence that warranted the DOJ or FBI or congress to look into it. On the other hand Trump's alleged crimes have a paper trail, multiple co-conspirators and have generated heat, so it's more than just people 'saying' mean things about him.

How did this crap end up in a gun violence thread anyway?

Underlined is the operative phrase. But if the thought of killing an attacker that may well kill you or a loved one bothers you,my advice is don't carry or get that thought out of your head.

Don't look at me. I'm innocent.

My advice is that if the thought of killing someone does NOT bother you - you need much more help that I ever will, my friend.

Not if they don't hit a target of flesh, it depends on what they hit.

Dude, I'm ok with guns being killing machines. Why aren't you?

That's what they were made for. We can't have an honest conversation about guns if we can't agree on their purpose.

Like the title says, "gun violence" is a misnomer. It's also nothing more than a talking point designed to instill fear of guns into people.

Why is it a misnomer? Well first lets determine what a "misnomer" is.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary ~ misnomer

Simple definition that does not have any sort of wiggle room to it.

Now, what is the definition of gun violence? Well, going by Merriam-Webster dictionary there is no definition for it. So we have to go for the individual definition for each word.

Merriam-Webster ~ gun
Merriam-Webster ~ violence

So, under proper grammar the term "gun violence" indicates violence caused by a gun.

Problem with this....guns do not cause violence. A gun cannot shoot on its own. A gun cannot walk around and threaten people, things, or animals. A gun cannot use force. A gun cannot cause violence. Period.

People with guns can cause violence. People with guns can walk around and threaten people, things, or animals. People can use force. In fact people can do those things without once holding or even referring to a gun.

So, if you're using the term "gun violence" know that you are using it inappropriately and falsely. If you continue to use it knowing all of the above, then know that those of us that are not so gullible are on to your use of it as a talking point meant to cause fear of guns.

Most deaths where a firearm is used are suicide. Usually 3/5ths to 2/3rds of those deaths where a firearm is used are suicides. When people hear the term firearm violence they are not picturing someone offing themselves, they are picturing someone committing murder. Which is why anti-2nd amendment trash use the term "gun violence". Because they know whining about the number of suicide deaths won't spur calls for gun control and neither will just whining about 11 to 12 thousand homicides a year. So they lump is all deaths where a firearm was used to pump up the numbers.

I'm just glad I've never needed one. I hope I never do, why? Because the thought of killing anyone, even an attacker bothers me.

Bothers me too, but not as bad as the thought of me, my family or so other innocent becoming a victim does.
