Half Washington sheriffs refuse to enforce new gun laws

Sheriffs in a dozen Washington counties say they won't enforce the state's sweeping new restrictions on semi-automatic rifles until the courts decide whether they are constitutional.

A statewide initiative approved by voters in November raised the minimum age for buying semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21, required buyers to first pass a firearms safety course and added expanded background checks and gun storage requirements, among other things. It was among the most comprehensive of a string of state-level gun-control measures enacted in the U.S. after last year's shooting at a Florida high school.

This law looks clearly unconstitutional to me, to the point that it never should have made it to a ballot but as I keep saying we do so suck now.

I think that everyone should agree to ignore this alleged law until the courts rule.

Washington has become overrun by stupid Liberals, like Oregon has. The larger counties dictation to the rest of the sate what happens. We have two states that have never seen so many attemts at gun legislation for reasons that happened in states that already control guns more.
 
Just another batch of laws the courts will have to sort out.

Ironically states like Washington play the same game with gun laws as red states do with abortion laws. If they don't like the constitution then they do what they can to chip away at it.

many anti abortionists CLAIM that their only goal is saving innocent life, while their real motivations are far more sinister

Many anti gun activists CLAIM their only goal is public safety, while their real goals are far more nefarious

By whom? Who has authority over a county sheriff?

Law enforcement officials aren't required to enforce unconstitutional laws.

Police are paid by the taxpayers to do a job. Do it or GTFO.

We're not paying theses pigs to have opinions. They're not constitutional scholars they are a tool of the justice system. Do your ****ing job.

Aaaand what motivation is that, exactly? What exactly is gained, precisely? Abortion may a divisive issue, but you'd be hardpressed to find anyone that says it's the most important issue on either the right or the left.

Because they want people to be powerless to the whims of the government. There are millions of gun owners who vote on this single issue alone.

LOL well apparently they aren't even enforcing laws now.

But for me to tell them to do their jobs isn't breaking the law. It's the first amendment. The one they are supposed to protect.

Sheriffs are elected officials, and their responsibility is to the electorate and to the Constitution. This law was enacted by popular vote. Were all of the voters who voted in favor constitutional scholars? I'd warrant that the average Washington State sheriff is much more conversant with the Constitution than the average Democratic voter. If the voters of a state voted to make homosexual sodomy a felony, would you expect sheriffs to start arresting gays?

55 of the elected sheriffs in Colorado sued the state over the Constitutionality of the 2013 gun control laws. My county sheriff acknowledged that the restriction on magazine capacity was unconstitutional and that he would not enforce it. Not only was he re-elected, the Democrats didn't even field an opponent to run against him.

If that was the law, which it couldn't be because of the Civil Rights act.

The law is the law. Aren't you a law and order type? Or only when it fits your narrative?

Illegal or unconstitutional laws are not laws that must be followed. "A law is the law" is what put 6 million Jews in ovens.

Off hand I know of quite a few that would go that route rather than disarm decent law abiding people. Including city and state.

Point of clarification, there’s no requirement for law enforcement to do anything at all until 7/1/19. By then, a temporary injunction against the new law could be ordered. Hopefully that’ll happen.

If not, and the law goes into effect, sworn officers and FFL dealers could be in legal jeopardy. Not good.

There are layers with law enforcement. Anyone who is the executor of law, can prioritize what to enforce and what not to.

Except that not all laws of the past are abolished. They could if they wanted to in some states.
