I am visiting a friend in Phoenix, Arizona next month. His loose-lipped partner let slip that he had purchased me a Glock 17 Gen 5 as a gift to celebrate a promotion at work. I am not and have never been a gun owner, so I am totally ignorant on the laws pertaining to this matter. My friend had answers, but truthfully, I'm mildly skeptical given some of the things I read on the ATF and CA state websites. I was wondering if any of you know whether or not it is legal for me as a California resident with no criminal record to receive as a gift a Glock 17 Gen 5 from my friend in Arizona while I am visiting next month and then to bring it back with me? Thanks in advance for any time any of you generous folks might be willing to spend educating me on this matter.

bottom line-a non licensed (ie someone without a federal firearms license) cannot give, sell, or transfer any firearm to a non-licensed individual whose legal residence is a state OTHER than the one the donor lives in. He could give you the gun by sending it to a licensed individual in California (assuming the pistol is legal in that state). You would then go to the licensed individual, fill out the necessary paperwork and pay any fees the Licensee may require

From what I've heard, anything newer than gen 3 in CA is illegal.

This too.

Edit for the OP: California only allows guns on the permissible list to be owned/purchased in CA. The certification process is expensive for the manufacturer and some simply forgo sales in California rather than put up with their BS. Glock pistols were differentiated by generation, and neither Gen IV or Gen V were submitted to CA for certification.
