On Friday a three-judge panel of the United States Appeals Court for the Ninth Circuit upheld California’s microstamping law – even though microstamping is theoretical at best.

The Ninth Circuit ruling came just over a month at the California Supreme Court ruled that an impossibility of compliance is not a sufficient reason for invalidating a law.

This is the logic that makes the left wing such a dangerous force to be reckoned with. Assuming they are aware of California's intention to rid the state of fossil fueled automobiles, how long will it take to outlaw fossil fuel vehicles that don't get 60 MPG?

Unbelievable. I guess for their family's sake it's a good thing breathing is an autonomic reflex, as these folks don't seem to have the capability to do so consciously.

Micro stamping is a promising practice but not ready to become a requirement. But if they could make it work who could possible be against this?

"even if it worked it would be easily defeated by replacing the firing pin or filing off the marking."

"Maryland canceled their ballistic fingerprinting program for firearms after 15 years with no crimes solved. The cost of the ballistic fingerprinting experiment was five million dollars."

Who could possibly be for it?

I thought you wanted to solve gun crimes? How can this possibly hurt you? Are you now an advocate for criminals?

It won't solve crimes. It won't help law abiding California residents because gun companies won't comply and there will be fewer guns for them to purchase lawfully.

A firing pin for a Glock is $40. A firing pin for an M1911 is $9. A file is less than $5. That's all it takes to make this technology useless. Is California going to ban files?

Even if you can micro ID a firing pin, the markings would be useless after a few dozen rounds are fired. Anyone who understands material properties knows how impossible this is to apply with today's technology. I'm not surprised that the 9th circus ruled in favor of this. I doubt they are ignorant to the fact this is a loophole way for California to deny citizens legal gun purchases.

Common sense isn't common.

Yes it will never be perfect. So why bother. That is pretty much true for every law.

Solving zero crimes is pretty damn far from perfect. It's perfectly worthless, though.

Yes. Let's not even research it further. Ever. Right?

You're supporting passing it when it's clear that similar efforts in the past failed totally, and the methods to get around the law have already been explained. How do you prevent anyone from sanding off the tip of the firing pin or simply replacing it with one that doesn't have the microstamp?

Sure, research it all you want. Just do it before you try to pass a law.

Isnt that what I said in my first post on this thread?

To clarifiy do you agree with others here that the law should of been struck because curent technology is unable to comply, however when or if the technology exists to make it reliable the law could be revisited at that time?

Yes I agree with that. Its what I have said all along

Ninth circuit should be impeached for being chronic idiots, and broken up into 4 more circuits.

I tried finding the ruling itself to see the words that was actually said on it. Couldn't find it as the article doesn't even refer to a case file. Do you perhaps know or could you link to it? I'm finding this very hard to believe. I mean seriously??? Impossibility of compliance is not sufficient reason for invalidating a law? That sounds like something from some sci-fi or fantasy book about tyrants.

Why not? I mean, if you’re going to decide that the impossibility of compliance isn’t cause to shoot down a law then you may as well keep “researching” useless stuff too.

It's a time-honored American tradition. It's how we initially outlawed marijuana when "social conservatives" still pretended to care about the Constitution.

Better ban Star Trek transporters ....I know, they dont exist yet...but one day, they will have the ability to make home invasion unstoppable.

Many have labeled it a promising practice. Why anyone would be against research in this area is beyond me

Micro stamping would be easily circumvented, essentially unenforceable, won’t do anything to stop unlawful shootings and, for all practical purposes, hasn’t been invented yet. The ONLY reason for such a law would be to create another firearm
Owner data base.

So no research into this area even though it has been labeled a promising practice?

What is promising about it? Just because somebody says “it’s promising” doesn’t mean squat.
