More Guns = More Gun Deaths

Its been said time and time again on this forum that more guns means more gun deaths. To some extent that's true and it does make sense. In the same way that if you have more cars you will have more car deaths if you have more guns you will also have more gun deaths. However, more guns does not necessarily mean there will be more deaths period. Simply by having more guns in a society does not mean there will be more deaths from causes other than old age. The one cause of death I would like to see go up is old age. All other causes of death I would like to see go down. Having more guns in a society, while there might be more gun deaths as an unwanted side affect there will be more lives saved because a gun can be used to save a life just as it can be used to take a life and it depends on the user.

There are still FAR too many thugs running around alive.

More guns in the hands of good people means more dead thugs.

Your main issue is deciding when we get to apply stats and when we do not, in order to split hairs on an over-argued subject.

We do not have enough definitive evidence that more guns will equate to enough new lives saved so that we outweigh the negative that more guns equals more gun deaths. You are assuming constants across the board but with no real stats to back up either condition.

To make this argument valid we need something to illustrate where we are likely to fall if there were more guns (or less guns for that matter.)

If more guns make us safer....why aren't we the safest nation on earth?

For a multitude of reasons. For instance, we use more cars than just about any other nation and so naturally that will result in more deaths due to automobile accidents.

Many countries function quite well and are safer...in fact better than us....without so many guns. I thought guns made us safer?

You can't compare us with different countries, different make up, different history, different culture.

No you can't. Same reason why, at least according to people such as you, you can't compare the USA with Japan with the issue of suicide since its different cultures.

Well in that case I can name well over a dozen countries other than Japan that have higher suicide rates than the USA.

Either more guns equals more gun deaths or it doesn't


In actual fact it does BTW - which is why the USA with more guns than people (only country in the developed world to boast that I think) leads the way with gun deaths.

The UK has strict gun control and so has very low numbers of gun deaths - particularly in mass shootings (one since 1996) despite being just as violent as the USA.

The USA has very lax gun laws and has almost one mass shooting per day.


If you took all (or nearly all) the privately owned guns out of the USA, you would guarantee a dramatic fall in gun deaths and particularly mass shootings.

It really is that simple.

Since this will never, ever happen in the US, and didn't happen in the UK or Australia, it's a nonsensical proposal. There is no need to even discuss it further.

But you would see a rise in other types of death which would outweigh the fall in gun deaths.
