3-year-old boy accidentally shot his 9-year-old relative after he found gun, police say - Chicago Tribune

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot a 9-year-old in the arm on Saturday morning on the West Side, according to Chicago police.

Family members rushed the 9-year-old girl to Rush University Medical Center about 11:30 a.m. with a single gunshot wound to the right arm, police said. She was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where she was in good condition.

I'll bet the NRA sends them membership applications in the mail.

Good, the NRA should send them some applications, which they can then use to get a good quality safety class that will include proper storage of firearms which will then result in no kids shooting other kids.

most of us who own guns encourage responsible practices involving storage of firearms. I made this thread 3 years ago on the topic.

Seriously guys, lock up your mother****ing guns!

Missouri 9-month-old fatally shot in his crib by 5-year-old brother, police say - The Washington Post

If you have children in your house, or if children are routinely visiting your house there is no excuse for why a five-year-old should be able to pick up your loaded pistol and shoot his brother in the head.

This was entirely preventable, someone who is five years old, does not have the capacity to understand the power of a firearm and the permanence of its consequences. If your personal defense handgun is not on your person it needs to be secured away where a child cannot get it, and under your porn stash in the side table is not secured. You need to have something with a locking door. Don't pull this "I don't have enough money for a safe " **** every handgun I have purchased has come with a trigger lock. now wants your kids or teenagers, that's a different story but when there five years old they are curious as hell I don't understand what a gun is or it's significance. The fact that this still happens in 2015 in America is absurd. I don't care if you have to go through the horrors of cutting back on your cigarettes or beer consumption to pay for something to keep your kids safe goddamnit protect your damn kids

btw I made that post while screaming into my phone using voice dictation, hence all the grammatical errors

I was under the impression that the NRA opposes mandatory safety training? 26 states allow concealed carry with no requirement for training. I hope I am mistaken.

I oppose mandatory safety training. It's too easy for an anti-gun government to turn that requirement into a infringment on the rights of the people. Why should the NRA be opposed to mandatory training? Training is their bread and butter. They'd make a lot more money every year and would get a lot of new members. I'm also for voluntary training, and getting as much training as you can afford and enjoy.

Can you list those states?

Yeay, guns!

The NRA opposes mandatory anything, not because they oppose the concept, but because anti-gunners are so unreasonable if you give them anything it only helps them pass newer laws.

Washington doesn't require any training, I know that for a fact, who else I don't know.

I can provide a map: https://www.thetrace.org/2016/02/live-fire-training-not-mandatory-concealed-carry-permits/

Scroll a little bit down and there is a map indicating which states require any training for concealed carry.

I see, so there really is no reason to think they would have been of any help in this sad situation.

Why? why should you have to pay a trainer in order to exercise your rights?

see I don't know you can make the argument that mandatory training for CPLs is a necessary thing, in Washington we don't have the requirement for training to get a CPL, Oregon and Idaho both have that requirement, and I am unaware of any study showing that Washington has more negligent shootings by CPL holders then our two bordering states.

Sure, because if these people had been NRA members they would have recieved materials showing them where to get training and would have access to NRA safety instruction.

The NRA is not responsible for someone who's not a member acting irresponsibly. I mean I guess you can say that 7/11 is not of any help in this sad situation either, that is literally true, but it's not a reasonable argument.

At the end of the day, the NRA does stand against mandatory training, so yes, they do oppose it. If they didn't oppose it, they would not stand against it.

Ooppsy, OP did not think that one thru very well, did he?

They oppose MANDATORY training. However, the NRA is big on gun safety and facilitates many such courses and encourages gun owners to take safe gun handling courses. They also distribute free literature with basic gun safety info. Basic stuff, like "assume every gun is loaded".

Then how to explain your post that IF they had joined the NRA they WOULD not have had this situation because they would have run off and had safety training? The NRA does not appear to be responsible for anything. And if that's the way it is, stating that membership in the NRA increases safety might not be a reasonable argument either.

I understand that for responsible gun owners the NRA provides a service. However they seem to not want to rock the boat enough to actually convert the irresponsible (but completely Legal) gun owner to a non threat to the rest of the community.

Politics vs. Safety....and NRA chooses politics. SAD.

Why is it being called an accident, when it's obviously the result of negligence?

They do oppose mandatory training. However, opposing mandatory training and offering volunteer training are two different things. Does your local gym advocate mandatory gym sessions? If not then why are they offering gym memberships?

My post was in response to a statement that IF the gun owner had joined the NRA they would have taken a safety course and this incident would not have happened,
I understand that the NRA has VOLUNTARY training. I also understand the typical NRA member is of course totally opposed to any mandatory training for gun owners, as a serious infringement on their constitutional rights.

A 3 year old child should not have access to a firearm. Period.

What we have here is negligent parenting, and possible Darwin award winner(s).

its fun seeing the hatred you gun banners have for the NRA. any tragedy or accident with a gun-the pavlovian rants about the NRA are spewed out. Was the gun legally owned? was the owner an NRA member?

West side, Chicago ... I think that answers the question.
