An alert security guard stopped a potential mass shooting in a SoCal school. Who knows how many people would've been killed had the shooting happened. Thankfully the shooting was stopped before it happened and nobody was killed. So you see, shootings can be stopped without passing more restrictive gun laws.

The guard overheard a student making threats in the school. It's not like any system worked, just a lucky guard and a dumb student.
I don't know about restrictive gun laws but it'd be a YUGE mistake to point to this as an excuse to do nothing.

A agree that we should do something about our school shooting problem. We should have more guards and they should be trained on how to spot potential shooters and stop them before they begin.

That's a start. Doesn't address the problem but might help keep the problem out of the schools. The problem being, of course, where the hell are all the psycho killers coming from? How can the tap be turned off?

I will be interested in seeing what, if any, charges are brought against this student. If the guns arent his, or are his gifted by his parents, what would they charge him with?

IMO it worked perfectly. These kids dont live in a vacuum. Any alert person, including fellow students (who have also turned in other kids) can overhear and report it. This is not the first potential school shooting reported this way.

The Seattle Pacific University shooting a few yrs ago, 2 shot, one of them killed. The shooter's friend said in interviews the shooter talked *seriously* about doing it...but he didnt really believe him.

And the news media should cover this for 24 hours, and celebratize this guard.

Unless the 17 year old is charged as an adult then we most likely will never know.

It was unclear if the suspect has been arrested, or who purchased or owns the weapons, CBS Los Angeles reports.

It only 'worked' because the student committed an offense by going to the school and threatening to go home and come back with a gun. That's cause, and allowed the search that found the weapons.
Are you saying this is evidence that nothing more needs to be done, that the system as is could be left to do it's job?

See? Totally jumping to conclusions. I didnt see that article say they were his guns.

And minors can own firearms.

My point was....jeebus I even wrote it...these shooters dont live in a vacuum. They talk to people. THey post on social media. They do have friends, most of them. It's already fairly common for people to turn in more overt slip ups and claims. Now we need to take that to the next level deeper...and making sure there are guidelines (new if needed) for authorities to act on the information.

And I didnt even imply that nothing more needs to be done.

Okay, make more things (threats in conversation and on social media for example) 'actionable' so authorities can look deeper. Like search a home. That work? Someone else here was advocating allowing teachers to be armed, with training and purely voluntary. I was surprised to find myself agreeing with that.
All those things might help keep the problem out of the schools so they have to be given a chance. Next step- try to find out where the psycho kilers are coming from and how to stop that happening. Because they won't go back to sleep if they can't shoot up a school. They'll take the show on the road.

It all depends. There are laws demanding probable cause and due process.

But IMO, I see no reason why, if there's a report (and criteria would need to be set for this) for authorities to go to a home and *request* to speak to the residents about the report. And *request* an interview with a minor (if that's the case), and *request* a search. Guidelines for all this need to be set. Policies developed.

But in most of these cases for at least school shootings and probably the ones with previous domestic abuse allegations (like the TX church shooter)...I would think the residents would be willing to consent. For the cases where domestic abuse is suspected, wait and go and ask when the suspect isnt there. Other legal residents can consent to at least a partial search. They can be interviewed. Etc.

For anything further, then they need to look at changes in the laws, as they have done for child and domestic abuse, in order to take reasonable preventative action.

As for the bold, I have been posting profile information on these shooters all over the forum.

I had not seen this story. Thank heaven for this security guards efforts. Its nice to know the good guys win once in a while.
