People who want more gun control often refer to Australia as an example where they've got much more gun control than the USA. Well that much is true but what makes Australia so great? Australia is not what I would call a developed country or a first world nation.

Australia is not what I would call a developed country or a first world nation.

Australia has a higher GDP per capita than nearly all European countries, and has one of the highest HDI numbers in the world.

Your starting off a thread. You have your topic picked.

What should I do next?

Here is a helpful hint:

Try not to use your opening paragraph to show that you picked a topic that you are wholly ignorant about. This thread is a fail.

I suggest you go with a topic in which you possess some rudimentary knowledge.

Well, you've demonstrated you know absolutely nothing about Australia whatsoever. Australia is beating the U.S. in virtually every single solitary world ranking that you can use to measure the quality of a country and of life living in it.

On Australia having one of the highest HDI numbers in the world I will give you that, however, their GDP isn't particularly high when looking at the big picture. The country with the highest GDP is China with 23.122 trillion. The USA is in second place with a GDP of 20.199 trillion. Mexico is in 11th place at 2.498 trillion and Australia is way down in 19th place at 1.39 trillion. So Mexico, a country that many people on this forum call undeveloped, is 8 spots higher than Australia in GDP.

GDP per capita is total GDP ÷ number of citizens.

He said GDP per capita.

This is a cry for help if I ever saw one. Stay in school, don't smoke too much weed, and stay away from right wing media. Any/all of those may make you stupid.

Don't smoke too much weed and stay away from right wing media? Its the left wing that smokes too much weed. And its the left wing, or at least the anti gun crowd, that needs to go back to school. They're not well educated.

What an inane thread.

What makes any place great? I'm game for any place that has great coastal California weather, low cost of living, live and let live community ethos, freedom to pursue the widest variety of interests without State interference, access to the widest number of goods, cheap housing, cool neighborhoods, bucolic towns, natural beauty and reasonably low taxes.

Unfortunately, that was California in 1960. Australia has some of that, but not enough to call it "great". In fact, I don't think a great country or region exists anymore, anywhere.

Crime prevention research center: Annual death rate for mass public shootings per capita 2009-2015 among 28 EU and US.
1. Norway
2. Serbia
3. France
4. Macedonia
5. Albania
6. Slovakia
7. Switzerland
8. Finland
9. Belgium
10. Czech Republic
11. USA

9. Austria

The 28 EU countries have 0.0602 annual mass shootings with a 95% confidence interval between .0257 and .094977

The USA has .078 higher frequency of mass shootings compared to the EU which is statistically insignificant.

As for Australia.... Australia only has 24 million people which is 7% of the population of the US. Australia has 3.1 people per square km and the US has 91.5 people per square mile or 236.9839 per square km. The US is more densely packed and that tends to increase gun violence. Comparisons that neglect population or population density are rubbish and should be ignored.

And for good measure:

Australia GDP (nominal) per capita (2017): 56,135 USD per person
USA GDP (nominal) per capita (2017): 59,495 USD per person

Australia GDP (PPP) per capita (2017): 49,882 USD per person
USA GDP (PPP) per capita (2017):59,495 USD per person

So yes, the US is richer than Australia. I would have used data from 2017 but it is still early in 2018 and it takes a while to collect a whole year's worth of data.

Edit: I found GDP per person data for 2017 from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita

You would like Mexico. At least you would probably like it more than Australia.

kangaroos and koalas.

I think every snake in Australia is lethal. plus they have some really nasty spiders. Even the platypus is venomous. But its a highly developed country saying its not is just plain stupid

I think this is in the running for dumbest thread of the week

I could tell you some very wonderful things about Australia from a sailor on liberty's point of view that would make you emigrate tomorrow.

The men don't dance with the women. When the band starts up, the women get up and dance with each other. If you dance with the women they will love you long time.

The men don't go "down under" with their ladies. They think it is disgusting. An American can have a field day there and the women will love you long time.

There are more, but I will stop here. Suffice to say their gun policies are the ONLY thing I disliked about Australia.

Oh, no! Don't tell me you were shot while you were there!

That's terrible!

Are you merely scrolling through the active threads looking for which ones to throw feces on?
Or are you just devoting all this attention to just my posts?

Do you often suffer from such paranoid delusions?

Sorry about you being shot while you were there. That had to have sucked.
