here is what happened. For years the gun banner movement targeted pistols. Their arguments were this-many of the points are factually accurate
1) pistols are used in most firearms murders and suicides
2) pistols are easily concealable and are the choice for almost all firearms crimes involving robbery, kidnapping, rape and menacing.
3) pistols are not popular for Hunting (this is changing) and are not all that accurate (in the hands of amateurs and compared to rifles)
4) many pistols are poorly made and cheap
5) pistols are not militia weapons (this of course is not true)
SO the move to ban pistols started 50 or so years ago-but FDR wanted them included in the 1934 De Facto ban. However, despite the crime stats the anti pistol movement has waned and by the mid 1980s it was dead. So the VPC and its scumbag leader, Josh Sugarman decided to target "assault weapons" by pretending they were the same weapons that had inundated Hollywood "action" films like Rambo, Scarface, Delta Force, Predator, Commando, Platoon and other films that had huge round counts fired through full automatic weapons. But how do you ban "assault weapons" without banning all semi autos which would never pass? You ban weapons that LOOK like Military weapons because Military subcontractors are an easy and cheap source of things like barrels stocks, etc for semi auto rifles
so the AWB banned semi autos based on idiotic arguments that pistol grips, flash hiders, bayonet lugs (which also attach the barrel in some cases to the hand guard) made these weapons more dangerous. The main goal was to set a precedent where guns could be banned for arbitrary reasons such as stocks or magazine capacities so that more restrictive bans could be implemented.
